So there's a set of Rays 57CR locally by me in almost new condition. Wheel was originally 18x9.5 +38 5x100 but redrilled "professionally" to a 5x114.3

Guy was upfront and honest with me, I looked at pics and wheels are almost brand new. Story is he got them for his Z (which is why it's redrilled) but he wanted a wider wheel so he's selling.

As far as I'm aware, doesn't redrilling a wheel kind of mess with the structural integrity of it? He's firm in saying how it's professionally done and will get pictures to me of the drill holes to make sure. Do y'all think it'd be safe? I drive very rough roads in NYC/NJ so I just don't want a new set of Rays dying on me just bc of the redrilling.

I’m sure if redrilled professional it would be fine, but to keep my conscience quiet I couldn’t do it

Those wheels are not rare. They can be found in the proper spec and fitment pretty easily. I would wait. If the wheels were long discontinued and hard to find, redrill might have been the only option. But this isn’t the case here.

I'd need to see pictures. but there's nothing wrong with redrilled wheels. Assuming it was done correctly.

When Audi/VW switched from using 5x100 to 5x112 in 2006 (on its lower model cars) redrilling expensive 3 pc and even less expensive wheels was very common until the aftermarket caught up.

That said, unless its a stupid good deal, I'd pass since that is an easily obtainable wheel.

How to know ? I will not take chance, wheels and tire are you life on the road
Well 22+ years in manufacturing as a machinist/welder/fabricator/engineer make me pretty confident I could tell ?‍♂

I was giving the OP my professional opinion. If you don't want to buy redrilled wheels, then don't. I'm not the seller ?

heres what he sent me, he also mentioned he will be getting those TE37’s redrilled by the same guy. Price he gave me is 1400 so about $200 saved for almost brand new wheels aside from redrilling

In all honesty, that's one of the best redrill jobs I've ever seen. Like its so good, he easily could have gotten away with not even telling you. Seems like a legit seller based on that alone.

If the price was right, I wouldn't hesitate to run those.

edit: I just saw the price. Idk if $200 would be worth it to me, but that's your call. I'd definitely try to get them for less personally. From a safety standpoint, they look fine.

Really? How are you able to tell? So if it’s professionally redrilled is there really no possible downside to getting them? I just want to drive them hard and don’t want to run into any worry with them

Well for one, they replaced the lug seats. 2. It was very common practice back in the day to fill the original holes or just drill the new pattern in between the old one (think "universal" lug pattern wheels). I'd like to see if any filling was done on the backside, but thats something you'd need to check in person or ask for pictures of the backside.

Appreciate the help bro, yeah I consulted with another friend and he said it looks good from the front as well and to ask for rear pics of the center hub, I just asked the guy for pics and will update when I get them

The main thing you need to keep in mind is that lug nuts only pull the wheel to the hub. They don't bear (much) of the weight of the car. That task is (mostly) done by the hub itself. Idk if I'd go out tracking the car around at 100+ mph turns and stuff on those wheels, but for street driving, I don't see any problems.

Yeah understandable, only thing is I don't want to feel "limited" with the wheel just because it's redrilled. I will without a doubt hit some fairly nasty potholes in my time of owning those wheels if I get them along with 100mph+ runs and sharp turns/cornering, i have plans to track this summer as well. My buddy says he's known some people that run redrilled for years no problem just as long as they are done correctly

Should look into where he’s getting them redrilled and do some research on the shop/person doing it also
