Has anyone installed an aftermarket shirt light?

i know we have the lights in the instrument cluster, but quite honestly I never see them. The way i sit in the car they just aren’t in my field of view.

I tried using the Cartek SSL (with the OBDII plug) but it will not work in a car as new as the R.
They say they have a new one coming out soon that will.
I actually find the on-dash sequential lights work pretty good after driving with them for awhile.
Bottom line I find choosing your shift points by track position far better since you can't feel or hear the revs anyway.
And maybe just me but finding the wires you need to hook one up is a bit of a pain... I ended up going with a 12V outlet plug but of course it didn't work in the end...
You can look at something like the AIM but you are approaching the $1000 mark and all that comes with it.
Let us know if you find a good solution.

Looks like you can use your phone, OBD reader, and something like Torque Pro with a Shift lights plug in:

Just have the phone mounted in your FOV? I'm not 100% sure but i think torque pro can read RPM from OBD on the type R.

Interesting idea especially if you could combine it with something like RaceChrono or some other phone app?
Thing is finding a mount/mounting position that will work?

Yeah, and I think the other part is finding a responsive OBD reader. The cheaper readers have a bit of lag. I have a generic "ELM" one and a more expensive OBDLink brand one that def seems to update more frequently and has less lag. But I have not used it for shift points: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006NZTZLQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Really a terrible shame that there isn't a good choice.
Seems like some of the overheat issues might be reduced if you could keep your shift points nice and smooth and steady and a little under the upper range just before the limiter. I know I'd prefer to drive it that way.
IMO these modern cars don't have much feedback about where you are... toss on a helmet and the hearing of an old fart and you got nothing.

I got tired of hitting red line due to me not seeing the stock shift light so I'm running a holley shift light and love it. I found a thread on optimal shift points for the R and set my light to go off at those rpms. I bought an adapter off Amazon to have 2 male and 1 female so that I could hide the plug in on the Obd2. Best part is... It's all plug and play through the obd port.

I just mounted right on the dash and it does come with the mount. Wires tucked easily and was really about a 10 minute install. Spent about 5 minutes setting shift points for my tire size. Rpms can be seen but after I set the shift points turned off the rpms so it would not reflect off glass. I chose red to match the type R theme.
Using that harness virtually hid the device obd plug under the dash.

Yeah sure beats havig the giant tachometer like yesteryear just to get a shift light. I had something like this on my mind a couple months back and thought... I wonder if they make something like this... And this fit the bill.

Finally getting around to doing this install.
Why the OBDII splitter cord?
Are you running the shift light and a dash or TrackMate or something else along with it?
Why not plug-and-play?
Thanks
