We see this once in a while. You really don't need to scrap the cables if you break the anti-rotation (plastic) tab on the cables at the shifter end. I would say that's a bit overkill. Really it probably won't want to spin and come out, but for some extra piece of mind just hold it in with a zip tie. Definitely do not drill into our fully adjustable shifter. Just thread the zip tie through one of the triangular holes in the frame.
Also, the zip-tie fix Pawinn describes in that linked video is meant for fixing a noise issue on OEM shifters (especially when using any brand of short throw adapter). I realize you probably meant to offer that as a retention option, but just wanted to put this in text by acuity here so people in the future can understand more clearly.
