You don't need to waste money on anything. No data gets lost on the radio, and it takes a minute for all dash lights to go out after driving it for a minute once the new battery is in. As far as USA there is no radio code.

the only thing you'll lose is your fuel mileage data, Id be more worried about a 3rd party 12 volt source frying something than losing a bit of useless data.
