Hi I have a 2015 Honda Civic Ex 1.8 L and just recently when braking have been hearing a noise in the rear passenger side. It sounds like a rubbery or springy sound and this sound only happens when brake sometime not always. I took of the rear tires and notice that the rear passenger caliper has a bit more play in it then the driver side. Wondering if the sound could be the caliper pins it seems like the outside pad moves a bit but is tight in the clip. Or would it be the caliper there is lots of pad left on the outside not sure about the inside pad. This noise is driving me crazy what could one do . Any other sugestings what else it could be.

If you bought the car new and haven't had the brakes serviced, it's time.
Salt and corrosion tend to bind up the calipers, especially on the rear.
At 94,000 miles I'm on my third set of rear pads and just had the right rear bind up enough to get stinky hot.

I bought the car used and have had it for only about 8 months. Also when I had the tire off and applied the brakes they worked great and when released all okay. The rear passenger side spins very easy and goes around pretty good. The driver rear when spin the hub it only spins around a bit and is hard a bit is this normal ?

No, they should both be the same on the rear - sounds like rear passenger side is the issue.
If the brake is 'dragging" then after a 5-10 minute drive at moderate 40+ kph the wheel will be hotter on the side that's not releasing all the way. Your mileage will also decrease slightly (1 - 3 kpg) and the car will feel sluggish (most notable on familiar roads with small to moderate uphills, mph drop when using cruise control) - that was my first indication this time.

It is the rear driver side that seems to be dragging a bit yet the noise and one that has more play is the rear passenger side. The noise seems to be coming from the rear passenger side the one that spins freely when wheel is off. The driver rear one is the one that spins just a bit and is bit hard. So would fixing this be as easing as replacing the pins on the side that is loose or would it be a caliper issue and need to replace caliper. Also can one replace one caliper or should they be replaced in a pair.

Unless you're outside the car it's difficult to be sure where the noise is coming from.
Fix the driver's side issue and see if noise goes away.
Calipers and pads can be replaced individually, but worn pads are typically done on both sides as they usually wear equally and to maintain braking balance side to side (same brand/type pad).

Well have been outside the car and the noise is coming from the rear passenger side for sure. So your saying the left caliper when tire off should spin freely without and resistance. The passenger side spins no problem with wheel off. How can one tell if caliper is bad or not. I am thinking the pins on the passenger rear and clean up brake hardware and put back together and see if noise goes away if not then look into the caliper on the driver rear side.

See post #4 to detect if caliper is binding. The "tightness" in rotation on the driver's side could be the caliper slide pins, caliper itself, or the hub/bearing. see above post for hub info. Might be time to take it to a dealer or brake specialist.

K thanks will check the parking brake. How can one tell if it is the parking brake making the noise ? And how does one check it. Will pick up some caliper pins for the one side and see if that works for the sound and take it from there.

Hi there will do. I haven' had much time I will do it on Saturday. I don't have garage here and will go to my brother in law and he will help me. He has all the power tools and a big garage to work in where I rent so no garage. I picked up caliper pins for both rear sides and am hoping that this is the problem . Will take caliper off check pads but they looked good well the outer pad anyway. So one caliper bracket off will take pads out and apply some grease on the ends and make sure hardware is in good shape.

Okay fixed problem put new caliper pins in and put some brake lubricate on the brake pads ends and backs. Now car is quiet and brake aren't as spongy. Both sides pin around now when spinning rotor around not like before. Please close thread.

next time, just take the pins out and clean them up and grease them, put them back. There is no way pins are worn out at this low mileage. They should be good for at least 200000 km. I usually do a yearly brake service where I'll remove the pins and clean up all the rust and re-grease everything with synthetic brake grease(kleen flo purple stuff is best I found).
