Does anyone else run a radar detector?

I have an Escort Max 360c and I feel like I'm using it wrong. It's constantly alerting to any and every car and it's causing me to tune it out which defeats any purpose of actually owning one.

I've tried poking around for how to filter CAS systems but FWIW it's supposed to automatically do it and mine just, doesnt.

Any radar detector will have falses with modern cars but I don't think it's supposed to be this many

Who else has one? What do you have and how do you like it? Does it alert to BSM and other CAS tech a lot?

Must be something with the settings. I use a Uniden R3 and it’s been going very well. Very little false positives and great long range detection. I’m in California and mainly drive on the highway so I tinkered with the settings to catch CHP’s KA band a little more. Rdforum and vortexradar are great resources to help pick settings based on your area.

I've been poking around a bit and watching videos but I just cant seem to get it, which is disheartening cause tech is kinda my thing.

What I really wanted was the Redline 360c but it's sold out everywhere and is even more expensive than this one which was already very expensive.

I'm about ready to return it and spend that money on other goofy stuff.

Are you experiencing this in the city or highway or both?

Both, my commute to work is about 45 minutes and is 50/50 highway and suburban city style areas. In the suburban area it's almost always dropping K and Ka alerts with a few X bands here and there. On the highway it gets quieter but it's still every minute or so it alerts to K and Ka at random frequencies/directions and half the time it's saying "LIVE Ka band" with an arrow or "Speed trap area" with renders it basically useless. I know that area is a speed trap area, that's why I have a RADAR DETECTOR.

The city commute is understandable. Even though I get very little false positives it’s more common in the city. The speed trap should be a setting or part of their database thing. You can probably disable that. Keep tinkering with the settings and try reading various forums if not I’d return it and get something with a better filter. More money isn’t always the best.

I agree, the radar detector is there to help, not hinder like you are saying. I have a Uniden R3 tuned settings-wise to specifically work in Ohio and Kentucky, and after putting false positives into memory my commute is generally all quiet on that front. Does your detector have mute memory? I have found the GPS memory mutes are fantastic with auto-open doors.

The higher end Escort line of Radar detectors such as the one you have, alert you to speed trap areas. Helpful when traveling in areas you don't frequent. If you want something more silent there are definitely better filtering radars out there, the Escort is designed as mass consumer product but you can make adjustments. You can pretty much disable the X band it is rarely used except in really rural towns, I've yet to see X band be a cop with a radar detector. KA is the most common used one and rare to be a false alert. K band can be triggered by a lot of BSM and Radar cruise in newer vehicles, most radars have an option to filter certain frequencies out though.

I would also make sure that you're on the most up to date firmware, could definitely have some effect on it.

I updated it when I bought it about a week ago and it was already on the latest firmware.

A solid chunk of my falses are Ka band, 50-70% I would reckon. I've been trying to keep a running mental note of the frequencies but they seem to be random. With the ONE cop radar I've encountered since I bought it I was getting hit by Ka from the speed radar AND was getting hit with a Ka false alerting from behind me that had been following me for a couple miles. I didn't actually know the cop was there until I saw him while passing the parking lot he was in because there wasn't any indication there was a new alert. It just kept saying "Ka....band...alert" every few seconds. I would have to have been looking at the arrows instead of the screen or road to notice.

I've dug more into the forums and I've found that some of the units are having hardware issues that cause a lot of Ka falses which is weird because they're supposed to be digital detectors.

If it does, I don't know how to use it. Whenever I hit mute on a false it'll mute then immediately start going off again.

Hitting mute on the detector also doesn't mute the phone alerts which is a special kind of annoying.

Vortex Radar is an awesome website. Radar hobbiest tries all the top detectors and goes into ultra in depth detail of each and every setting and how they effect real world performance. He lists all the settings he recommends for different areas and why. This is his configuration setup for your max 360 version. I use pretty much his recommended settings for my uniden R1 with great results.

I just got the Uniden R7 which Ill get hardwired in the R once spring comes along. Running it currently in my daily driver to see how it does and im fairly impressed at how well it filters out false alerts from BSM equipped vehicles. I think some of the newer hondas and jeeps can trigger the R7 every now and then though because thats what im mainly around when it goes off.

Update, I can actually go through my alert history and see each alert and their frequencies from my drive today.

I had 38 alerts from my drive to and from work, about 25 miles, half city, half highway driving.

35 Ka band, 2 K band, 1 X band alert.

There were NO cops checking speed at any point drive to work or back that I was aware of.

Weird, my Max 2 never had that many false alerts. My Uniden R7 definitely has less though and has much more range on alerts. I'd suggesting getting a different radar detector.
