looking to purchase a type R and was curious if any years were better than others in regards to the powertrain / overall build? i dont plan on tracking the car and it wont see extreme heat, mostly just spirited drives in wine country lol. crazy to me that honda still has tranny issues with these / si’s as it was a thing back when i have my fg2 si

2017 - 2021. They're all the same as far as powertrain. Just buy any year within your budget, used or new.

I've babied mine on the problem 1-2 shift, and now it's like butter. Bought with 1600 miles, and nursed it along for about 3k miles and now it slips in with no problem. It's difficult, because the car asks to be driven hard. I personally just avoided it in 1st/2nd for the first bit and now it's all good. I totally realize it's possible that it's all in my head too.

And no sensing with a volume knob is nice, so go 2019. I'm totally biased though ?

2017 and 2018 are identical. 2019 gets buttons on the head unit, including volume knob. 2019 also has a LED light above the shift knob, and an LED on the parking brake button.

2020 gets everything 2019 has and also got several other updates/enhancements (front bumper/rear bumper trim, different brakes, different shift knob, Honda sensing, and more) but it came at a price of nearly $1500 more in MSRP from the 2019.

No performance changes in any year of the 10th gen CTR, unless the 2020 brake change is something to throw in that category

2020 also has an upgraded radiator (to help aid in heat issues, didn't work so well though) and suspension components (adaptive dampers can adjust 2x more than the 2019 model, also softer in comfort mode but offers more grip in +R mode).

I'd go '19 if you plan to keep it a long time. Who knows what kind of 'Honda sensing' sensors will break down the road. I also think the current aftermarket bumpers aren't compatible with '20's because of said sensors.
