I'm curious if anyone here has recommendations for a quality portable jump starter. My battery is nearing the 2-year mark and I've read numerous reports of our factory batteries dying young. Therefore, I've started doing some research on lithium-ion jump starters in case mine ever dies unexpectedly on me. Anyone currently own one of these?

I have bought 2 of the DBPOWER brand jump starters. The first was a 400A version, which I had to use once on my wife's car and it worked. I have also bought a 600A version for my current car, but have not had to use it yet. Seems like they don't have the 600A version anymore, but they have an 800A version now:

Amazon.com: DBPOWER 800A 18000mAh Portable Car Jump Starter (up to 7.2L Gas, 5.5L Diesel Engine) Battery Booster with Smart Charging Port, Compass, LCD Screen and LED Light (Black/Red): Automotive

How's the stand-by life? As in, how long will it usually hold its charge while not in use? I've seen some brands say they should be recharged anywhere between every 3 months up to a year if it's not used.

For twice the price ( 2 X $70) you may find a new battery.
Or bought jumper cables. Or AAA member card ?

Hard to go buy a new battery if your car won't start.
1-car household and I try not to depend on the kindness of others in emergencies.
I have AAA, but my time is valuable I'd rather not wait around for 2 hours.

$70 for the ability to conveniently jump start mine, or someone else's, car an unlimited number of times sounds like a no-brainer to me.

Buy a battery right now, don't wait or don't spend $70 you may not need or use just one time
I've used my jumper multiple times over the years. It's easily worth it for the convenience.

Are you helping all your neighbors ?
Or if it's for your car, there are serious problems ...

For 25 years, I have never needed a boost and I ride a lot

That could be a huge waste of money. When I traded in my Corolla it had the original battery.... 13 years later. Still worked great all the time and it gets -30 here. Batteries can last 1 year or 20 years. No point in replacing one until it starts dying.

You may not be wrong.
Unlike Toyota, Civics in the US are known to have battery problems.
In my family, we had Toyotas before the Civics. The batteries were still good after 10 years.

Isn't buying a battery booster also a waste of money?

You said yourself that Hondas have battery problems. While I had my stock battery replaced under warranty, I haven't needed to jump it since. There's no harm in having a $50 jumper. Its not much money, and it can really save a lot of time especially if you happen to be on a trip or on your way to work.
