Does putting a drop in turbo make your car a build or just more FBO since our cars came with a turbo and technically its a bolt on?

Your stock turbo blew right?

To me this is just a replacement for something that came with your car, upgraded or not.

This is what I'm saying. Even if I went W2, its literally a replacement part. There is no work that goes into making it fit.

until you've actually built something on your car, i.e. the engine or done cosmetic mods that require more than just removing a bumper for a new one or adding side skirts, you have modded your car. You do not have a build lol.

So does a custom sound system constitute a build?

What about adding bolt on suspension parts? How many does it take?

Also, who cares? It's all penis measuring and takes away from joy

By some folks measure I don't have a build, but by others I have a lot of mods.

I just enjoy driving. Don't let these people and their comparison jealousy ruin your day

This is dumb. A build is whatever you want your car to be.
no, modding and having a build are different. People with actual builds, cars that took months and months of work to finish is a build. bolting on parts that fit exact specs of the factory parts is not.

Okay so I’ve got over
$25k in mods on my car, but since I haven’t opened the engine it’s not a “build”?

"built" is a reference to internal engine work. could be just in the head or bottom end also. however both in definition and in practice you BOLT the turbo on the on engine.... yes they are studs and nuts but the action is bolting on a part.

So this is always a contentious thing. Build versus modified.

Arlington has it technically correct when he said "People with actual builds, cars that took months and months of work to finish is a build. bolting on parts that fit exact specs of the factory parts is not."

That's the classic textbook definition of it. But these days a lot of people use the words kind of loosely. Even here at the forum, there's a "Build Journal" where people with an SRI and LED lights have posted their "build".

Look, 99% of people here that customize their cars, like me, drive modified cars. True builds are rare. But honestly, it doesn't bother me if people want to say their car is a build. As long as it's their definition and they love their setup, does it really matter what it's called? At this point it's just tomayto, tomahto.

Having a built motor doesn't define having a build...

FWIW I consider my FK7 that's pretty much modified with all off the shelf parts just as much of a "build" as my dedicated track Evo that I've dumped over $50k into including a slew of 1 off billet parts and plenty of custom fabrication work.

At the end of the day I don't see a reason to qualify one's involvement level of modifying their car by using certain terms, if someone is interested in modifying their car that's really all that matters.

I agree and that's what I tried to convey in the last paragraph of my previous post.
