Hello! I see some much older threads on this topic but I don't see specifically what I'm looking for.

My oil was recently changed, and I think they overfilled it:

Honda Civic 10th gen Oil overfilled recently, how to siphon out just a little? PXL_20210216_231434749.MP

(and not by a little from what I can tell....)

Besides a full oil change - does anyone have a suggestion on how to get the oil out? I saw some people suggesting using aquarium tubing and sucking it out with a syringe... has anyone actually *done* this? Are there risks...?

Is it easier just to drain a little oil out instead? I'm partial to the tubing and the syringe so I don't have to get on my garage floor... but I'll do whatever's needed.

Just looking for some guidance from folks that may have had this happen as well. Thanks!

Buy a syringe and thin tube from amazon and draw out the oil. That looks like a lot of excess oil so it may take a while. I took out ROUGHLY 0.25 quarts and it took me from the top of the orange plastic to just below the upper marking.

Hi!

First, thanks all for the help. I went the syringe route, and got the one off Amazon that said "single use only." It came with tubing and worked quite well.

The YouTube link was quite helpful. For anyone doing this for the first time like me, here's how it went:

  • I put a large flattened cardboard box down over the engine so I'd have a workspace.

  • It took a little work to get the tube down far enough so that pulling on the syringe created any suction. I found it helpful to rotate the tubing as I went down to get it past all the little stops/bumps.

  • I pulled out a full syringe worth of oil, tested the level, repeat.

  • In the end I pulled out ELEVEN syringes worth of oil (!!!!) By my estimation, this is a little over an entire quart.

What did we learn?

Check my oil more often!
ALWAYS Check the oil after having it filled by someone else.

Just spin off the filter... it sits above the oil pan.
You’ll get about 1/4-1/3 cup.
If you need more removed, start the engine briefly, let it drain down and do it again.

IMO Jorus don't want to work with oil change, he may not like to play with oil filter

Buy stuff you will likely never use again?
May be true, but this is a $0 solution.
Appeals to the frugal German in me.

Wanted to come in and say I did an oil change last month. Overfilled to just over top of the orange so probably 1/2 quart overfilled. Car ran fine. Coincidentally the next day I left the car running extended idle for 30 mins for the first time ever. I've never let the car idle for more then 1-5 mins since new. After this really long idle I backed out and as soon as I went reverse and started moving hella smoke out the tailpipe. I knew it was overfilled oil but I've never seen this extended idle then taking off burning oil like that! Like I couldn't see out the rearview mirror smoke! I drove a 1/4 mile and it stopped and never happened again the rest of the week. Week later I removed the extra 1/2 quart.

So question is has anyone ever overfilled and thought it was fine, but after extended idle and then driving off made exhaust smoke show?

Over filled is never an option. That is why cars's builder put notches on oil dipstick

Don't drive the car if it's overfilled with oil ?‍♂ Just take the extra 2 minutes to drain it so you don't damage your car. Extended idling is also a horrible idea on these cars, that's how you get fuel in your oil.

If you were blowing that much smoke, you need to do another oil change ASAP.
