As a mechanic of 11 years, it's ok to change the oil early. I tend to run my Civic 2.0 to about 8,000 miles or so(about 20%), but I also use Mobil 1, Wix XP, or K&N oil filters with either Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge oil. Oil these days is way better than back in the 80s and before, and newer engines tend to have less blow by than older engines, helping the oil last longer. My wife tends to change the oil on her Smart car once a year, but she barely did 10,000 miles a year before we moved to the mountains. She also uses full synthetic oil in that with a good filter.
Fun fact: Smart cars used a bored out Mitsubishi Kei car engine.

I split the difference and change at 7500 miles which leaves the oil around 25% life. 5k is overkill.

I changed mine after owning it a month, the dealer said they changed it when I bought it but at only 2,000 miles of my driving, the oil came out black. I changed it with a WIX oil filter and a Mobil 1 and a quart of Synthetic Lucas treatment

Do any of you add a magnetic oil drain plug? I do this to all of my vehicles. It is amazing at how much metal it catches.

When my minder gets to around 30%, there is a change that occurs and I get a noticeable amount of more engine sound. Rev match downshifts are much louder and raspier. It also sounds like it’s running worse on cold morning cold starts.

When I get fresh oil in it, it’s night and day how much smoother and quieter it is. Call me crazy, but something changes chemically around that time. I check the oil regularly. It doesn’t consume a drop.

Maybe it’s fine. The oil that is 5000-7000 miles deep since the last oil change could still be lubricating just as well. But I want that bitch running as smooth as it is now at 200k miles.

Same happens when you switch to 5w20 or whatever thicker oil than OEM. It’s crazy how loud the engine sounds with 0w20 oem compared to 5w20 torco oil.

I change mine exactly at 5000 miles. I also use Mobil one and I use the OEM filter.

What so you say running thicker oil will quiet the engine noises?
