Since honda nowadays sources different brand names to make their oil filters and hamp is getting discontinued, I started to look into a aftermarket alternative.
The high cost (aprox. 19euro )
For a crappy filter doesn't give me confidence into buying oem honda.
Honda used to use Tokyo Roki or Filtech filters which where great filters. After those stopped they used fram, purflux and now Mahle/Tennex.(in Europe)
I know in the usa they have a lot more choices which we can't get in Europe.( mobil one,Purolator,wix,...)
So to find a great filter that doesn't cost almost 20euro was something I needed to find.
I ordered several different brand name filters based on looks and other reviews on YouTube.
I ordered the ones which I couldn't find any reviews from and which looked good and Are easy to buy.(And didn't cost too much)
Due too a fault from the company which I ordered from the filters are not shipped out yet.
The oem filter part number for my 2018 Civic 1.5T sedan is 15400-RBA-F01 which says its a Mahle/tennex filter.Other part numbers that also fit are the 15400-PLM-A02 or A01 filter.
The filters i ordered are from these brands:
- Blue print ADH22114 ( which is a subcompany from Febi billstein )
- Vaico V30-1338
- Oem Hyundai/kia filter S26300-2750
- Kavo Parts (AMC filters) HO-824
I did received The AMC filter which I found on amazon .They supposedly source their filters from Japanese fabricators.
I cut open the filter to analyze it.
On first sight the filter has a different style Seal then the oem honda ones.It comes out rather easy I personally don't really like this type of seal .Most of the oem japanese/korean/chinees cars use the same seal .Most aftermarket american filters use this type of seal.
The inlet has 8 inlet holes and there are 4 full threads to screw the filter on.
This is plenty and strong enough.
The anti drain back seal looks to be made from regular rubber type it isn't as flexible as the silicone ones. Most better made filters use a Silicone anti drain back valve Usually red or sometimes white in color.
The filter has a coil spring underneath to give constant pressure to the Anti drain back valve.
This is a better type then the usual used leaf type spring.
The filter media is nice and evenly spaced ,it has a metal top and bottom cap and a crimped seal. There are 54 pleats and here's also no excess glue to be noticed so this looks to be a good filter.
The bypass valve is made from some sort of plastic the better ones use a type of rubber seal.
The core is a metal spiral core with round holes in them. This looks to flow plenty.
The canister itself has a wall thickness of 0.6mm .Most of the time they range between 0.4 -0.5mm.The thicker ones are 0.8mm and are stronger against higher oil pressures.
After cutting the filter media and laying it out it apears to be a paper filter media and its 50mm wide and 1190mm long which makes this filter have 595cm² of filter media .This isn't a whole lot a oem honda 15400-PLM-A02 filter has 736cm².
I will be posting the other filters on here too when i receive them.
I hope there will be at least one filter that is good enough to use in the future.
Here are some links for who is interested in them. There are also a lot of filter reviews on youtube or on "bob is the oil guy".com
