Notice: Buying and selling from other site members

I wanted to offer a few tips based on things I have seen here at CivicX:

1. Buyers, the sad truth is that while the great majority of site members are great people, there are without a doubt people that join the site with the intention of scamming you. It is up to you to do your due diligence of evaluating a seller before handing over your hard earned money. Ways to to do this include but are limited to:
   • Checking and seeing how long they have been a site member
   • Do they have a legitimate looking post history?
   • Did they offer pictures that they took of the item they are selling?
   • If it's a KTuner or Hondata device, did they provide evidence of the device being unlocked? (otherwise it is a paperweight)
   • Does their profile appear authentic?
2. Buyers and sellers, only use payment methods that offer protection. One of these is PayPal, but only if you use the "goods" option and NOT the "friends and family" option. Yes there is a fee for this but it is a very reasonable charge for the service and protection that PayPal is offering. Venmo, Cashapp, Western Union, money order, etc all offer little if any protection.

Site members, if you see anything that looks suspicious, please feel free to report it (using the report button) and we will handle it accordingly.

There was a member on here (can’t remember his name) but had an SRI and we agreed on a price. Wanted me to do EMT, or COD (collect on delivery) but refused to do PayPal “goods” and was refusing to meet me halfway (hour drive for both of us) stating it was too much gas, even after I offered to give him a bit of gas money.

Needless to say, because of his lack of posts on here and all the red flags, I decided that it was suspicious and ultimately let it go.

Buyers, unless you know the person personally, please do not do anything without protection.

I should have read this before I purchased a KTuner from a fraudulent member! Thankfully I was able to get my money back but the rules above are super important!

At my forum, I installed a member feedback/reputation mod that required members to leave feedback on all seller/buyer transactions. I don't know if there's a similar mod available for this forum software but maybe the admin could look into it.

Putting the rules as a sticky on top of each sales section also helps. And so would setting a minimum post count before allowing to post something for sale (in classifieds).

The sticky would be good but an actual permanent rules block above the classified topics is more "in your face".

This is what I have at my forum. The admin here is welcome to use and modify this for CivicX.

To add to the feedback and great ideas already mentioned, it would be super useful to have some sort of buyer/seller feedback system that allows members share their experience dealing with someone over a transaction. Even if it's just a sticky thread of people posting the usernames of the member the dealt with, whether it was a good or bad experience, and why. That way people can search that thread for whoever they are considering dealing with as a point of reference to validate their reliability.

For example, I just bought a Ktuner yesterday from a guy who posted in the classifieds and I was skeptical about it because he only had like 9 posts. They seemed to all be buying/selling related so I took a gamble on buying it. It turned out to be an awesome experience though. I trusted he wouldn't screw me over and he trusted the same from me, he even went as far as shipping it out and sending me a picture of the receipt as proof before accepting payment from me.

Hearing he had a previous transaction on here like that would have definitely quelled my worries from the start.

@360glitch has there been any progress towards possibly setting a minimum post contribution and/or time spent on the forums before new members can PM and sell stuff on the site?

I know at the end of the day it’s up to people to be smart and vigilant, but I feel like 90% of these scammers would go away with something like that implemented, since majority of them have 0 posts and brand new accounts.
