Erm. I don't think going to slotted/blank rotors is going backward. As RacingManiac posted, you're not going to find a lot of race cars with drilled or even slotted rotors. In the end, what it comes down to is that any decrease in the contact area between the pad and the rotor decreases brake performance, and there are other and better ways to dissipate that heat.
Sorry, but this is where people get it wrong. A reduction in surface area does not reduce braking "force". Friction is only determined by force, and the coefficient of friction. This is why you see small cars with smaller tires stopping in the same way with big cars and bigger tires. The only reason why racing tires are wider is a better job at managing heat and can take the brutality of the track.

One of the main reason rotors are drilled is so it can expel the gases and any fluids between the pads and the rotor. Kind of like how treaded vs. Non treaded tires vastly perform differently in the rain. The treads help push the water away from the contact patch while the same with drilled rotors, by pushing fluids away. This in turn also prevents warping of rotors.

So in short, yes. Drilled rotors greatly help on track days.
