I can get a 400+hp Mustang GT for mid $30k's so a 4 banger turbo with 300 should be doable at under $30k. Hell the Ecoboost makes over 300 and that is under $30k.

If it was turbo and 300 hp, then it for sure wouldn’t be under $30k. That’s a pipe dream.
i agree. if it was 300 hp turbo 4 this thing will probably be mid to high 30s and then everyone would complain about it being too expensive. its impossible to please everyone.

people arent buying FRS/BRZ to be fast. They buy it because the cars are fun to drive (like miatas). 2800 lb, RWD, 6MT with 240 hp (w/o the atrocious torque dip on the 1st gen) is plenty enough to have fun.

Economy of scale. Look how many Mustangs Ford sell compared to the 86/BRZ. It’s not even in the same ballpark. Not even the same league.

The more you can manufacture cars/engines, the cheaper production becomes. The Mustang being a high volume platform can invest in better engines because they will sell like hot cakes. The 86/BRZ is a low volume platform that can’t invest in a turbo motor without significantly increasing the production cost and consumer MSRP.

I used to work in automotive supply chain and people really don’t get how expensive cars are to make or how just because an automaker has a certain engine, it’s not free for them to throw in everything. Every dime of production is a fight so the platform can be profitable. The belief Subaru can just use their turbo engines for the BRZ and keep the price low is a *huge* misconception. The car would be north of $40k MSRP and no one would buy it at that price.
