I'm anal. I checked the oil level at least once every couple weeks up to the first change. I always like to keep a bottle of spray wash and wipe as well as micro fiber towels in the car just for cleaning small dirt spots.

Check the oil when the engine is cold. I suggest using synthetic oil. Other than that there is nothing to check apart from brake fluid.
