Updated September 29 with the first video of these prototypes.

Updated September 4
with new photos of a caravan of similar prototypes, with current Type R in tow being benchmarked again.

Here's some more photos that we caught of what could be a mule for the next Type R Civic which can be seen here wearing red Brembo brakes and a three-center exhaust setup. Another clue that this is the next halo Civic is the fact that it was being shadowed by the current Type R -- being used for benchmarking purposes. The mule body still retains the Acura ILX front end seen in earlier prototypes - as the focus for now is likely on testing of the powertrain, chassis, suspension, brakes, wheels, etc.

___________________________________________

The 10th gen Civic 5-door hatchback prototype was just spotted in Spain near Honda's IDIADA proving grounds. This isn't the first spotting of the 5 door hatchback, but compared to the previous one spotted, this one features some changes.

The front still wears an old Acura ILX front end but the front lower bumper now features 3 air intakes, as in the patent drawings for the coupe and sedan variants. The tail lights are now exposed to show the same wraparound tail lights we've seen on the Civic concept, as well as the coupe and sedan prototypes. The window trim is now in a more production looking silver finish. And the biggest and most surprising difference is the 3 exhaust tips in the center of the rear bumper, with one odd smaller center tip. The wheels are also bigger than on the previous prototype and suggest a sporty model.

Could some of the sportier parts be a sign that Honda is testing parts and components for the new Si or Type R model? Wouldn't surprise us.

Damn that rear view looks very aggressive! The lights rising up like that make it look like a high spoiler.

The exhaust configuration is definitely weird. Did Honda get inspiration from the Type R render you guys did lol. I like the look but make mine all the same diameter please :)

Nice spotting and those wheels look like lightweight aftermarket type by like OZ or BBS. Can anyone make out the lettering? Camo still hiding alot but shape isn't bad so far.

I like the rear view but the side profile looks borderline minivan-ish. Hopefully that's just due to the camo hiding the lines of the car and making it look boring from the side. Either way it's good to see hints of the hatchback finally.

Its still mostly an ILX with a current gen euro hatch rear end... pretty sure the ILX has silver window trim. Not really revealing in terms of looks.... BUT

Those exhaust pipes and wheels. very interesting... could they be testing new Si, or more likely, next gen Type R components? That'd be my guess.

That's definitely the new tail light design though. You think it's just grafted onto a current euro hatch rear end for test purpose? A lot of work to go through just to test the lights.

The concept coupe had middle exhaust pipes so we really might be seeing it on an Si or TypeR model. Going to look aggressive and unique.

Awww, this is the biggest tease ever! Especially considering the hatch will debut after the sedan and coupe.

Reminds me of the Veloster with that hatch shape and center mounted exhaust. This is MUCH better looking from the back though with that high mount lights that go all the way around.

Only thing they share are the center exhausts. Veloster is hideous! This prototype isn't as sporty as I hope but it may still be a cobbled together car wearing other car's parts. And even if not, it's still wearing tons of camouflage hiding lots of lines.

Those are pretty much exact copies of the current euro hatch lights, the only difference in them is the center light bar that goes across the back end (which they could've grafted from the coupe trunk) But the outer housings are the current euro hatch lights....

Not too much to see here, like mentioned above, still a lot of ILX.

As for the exhaust, it would be unique if they left it that way. Could the smaller center pipe be for normal (not-in-VTEC) driving and the two larger ones for when the car hits VTEC? Or maybe normal mode only runs the center pipe and a Sport mode switches to the cannons?

I think it will be a love it/hate it kind of thing, but would be instantly recognizable.

Back definitely looks similar to the current euro hatch. Maybe the next gen model will pretty much carry over the rear styling? Seems like a lot of trouble to graft lights onto old rear just to test some lights.

I could have sworn that the 9th gen euro hatch had the full width tail light, but i think they got rid of it when they did the refresh. I just couldn't find a good picture of the pre-refresh hatch on google. So it might not have been grafted on, it might just be an older pre-refresh euro backend. (the refresh gave the base hatch more Type R cues like the spoiler they added). Because the outer housing are exactly like the current hatch (as is the shape).

I could see honda sticking with the split rear window design of the 8th and 9th gen hatch. It offers traditional hatch versatility (height wise) but still looks sportier than a traditional square hatch rear (like the fit or Golf).

I was right.... here is a picture of the 2014 (pre refresh hatch) with the full width taillight.... that's exactly whats been grafted on the back of this ILX body
