Yeah ta, if it was clear the housing was metal I wouldn't have bought this. It isn't stated in the product description that it is, and for a car that is known to suffer high running temps I feel it's a poor choice to market this. I've never bought a metal intake before and assumed yours was a plastic variant like others available on the market.
The fees for returning this to the sender didn't seem viable on top of the postage fees for delivery, so I installed it. It adds a nice subtle sound and the quality is nice, but the reason for purchase was in favour of performance gains, which it seems I'll lose as your intake housing will hold more heat and for a longer duration than the stock box ?
If I do encounter issues it'll be removed and replaced with a more suitable product. It's very doubtful I'd buy an alternative Mishimoto intake so soon after realising the one I have isn't beneficial to fast runs/track days and was a waste of money, if this is the case of course.
Thank you for the response, all the best.
I understand your frustration but it does state on their website that the box is steel under the “Purchase Includes” “Steel Airbox” It also says the box is powder coated, can’t powder coat plastic. It’s also pretty clear that the box is metal in the pictures.

I didn't buy it via their website.
I haven't been impolite, the world still turns, I'm not holding on to any frustration, I won't lose sleep, I can afford an alternative.
I do think my point regarding the material is valid though especially from a manufacturer that is a specialist in this field, maybe I'm just a numpty for buying one. Seems as useful as a chocolate fireguard either way.

Thanks for your input. I'm out.

Something you could do if you want to, you could heat wrapped. I’ve tested many intakes and this (wrapped) was one of the best results so far . Just another option.

New CivicX name, but I have been here contributing development information on the FK8 Civic Type R since the beginning. I was previously at USR and have much time developing, testing, and competing in FK8. Last year during Covid, I opened my own business focusing on road racing and track day vehicles.

Having worked with Mishimoto since 2017 on the FK8, we have been testing the new race intake setup for a few months. I can't give out any details but we have only had positive results. I will say that the overall fitment is tight but perfect. I for one have had great results with the original metal box Mishimoto intake, and heat soak was never an issue due to air circulating through the engine bay. Sure a metal box sitting bear to a heat source will heat soak, if no air is flowing around it, but engine bays are not sealed from air. We have temperature data proving that. The new intake is no longer metal, and it is lighter, as well as the ability to fill the area easier allows for a larger filter as well. The idea ce about as I visited the Mishimoto headquarters on the way to Global Time Attack event in New Jersey. I unloaded the USR time attack Type R and drove it into the Mishimoto development building toeet engineers and designers. That car had the Full Race EFR turbo setup but was using the Mishimoto intake box with a larger billet custom MAF housing and a custom air box lid I fabricated to fit it all up. This setup sparked a conversation of why we needed a larger housing as well as using the larger inlet tube. Happy to say it may be some influence for the development of the new race intake system. We have been very happy with the results and look forward to the release of the full data results and the intake being available for the public to enjoy. Until then here is a teaser pic from our test car.

so plus 30 degrees over ambient is good? my friends running PRL are at ambient IATs when I am 30 to 40 high, always. The metal was a very poor design choice.

When you are on a track, road course that doesn't happen. But on the street yes agree with you, that why I wrapped , after the wrap the Mishimoto wrapped VS PRL wrapped performed at lower IAT the Mishimoto, and no need to correct ro do adjustments to the S trim with PRL was for over the places.

In testing we did not ever see over ambient temp while on track, maybe while sitting or in traffic, but with airflow in the engine bay on track, we did not see airbox temps over ambient, using the original metal airbox design

On the track it still is higher IAT then others/ambient. I was running about 20 over last track day.

That look very neat you've done a good job.
My track days don't start until next month so I'll be monitoring/datalogging temps and power loss from there, that way I can make informed decisions.
Cheers for the pic.

Stellar job with the heat protection! Love it!

And yessir! 3.2" for the MAF housing size
