Why is it the maxima CVT can handle 300hp but a civic can not?
Aren’t most CVT basically the same internally?

Thats like asking why an automatic from a Dodge Hellcat can handle 700 HP but an automatic transmission from a Mazda 3 cant. The transmission in the Mazda 3 for instance is designed for that power application and that specific car only, while the auto in the hellcat is specifically manufactured to handle 700 horsepower. This concept is no different for CVT transmissions as well, they may function the same and do the same thing but they are designed completely differently for different power applications.

If I recall correctly, Nissan had some reliability issues with their CVTs from Jatco. I don't know if this is still a thing, maybe that has already been solved a long time ago.

Subaru wants to bring their 2022 WRX with a CVT. The AWD car will have 400 horsepower and 360 lb-ft

I think those were the most powerful CVT cars in mass market:

2002 Audi A4 2.5 TDI (163 hp / 230 lb-ft = 310 Nm / FWD)

2011 Audi A4 3.0 TDI (204 hp / 295 lb-ft = 400 Nm / FWD)

2015 Nissan Maxima 3.5 liter V6 (304 hp / 260 lb-ft = 352 Nm / FWD)

2016 Subaru WRX 2.0-liter turbo boxer four (268 hp / 258 lb-ft = 350 Nm / AWD)

2022 Subaru WRX STi 2.4-liter turbo boxer four (400 horsepower / 360 lb-ft = 490 Nm / AWD)

To clear something up, there's no way the STI will be CVT. The CVT will only come in the lower power WRX trims just like in the past.

I edited the previous post.

So it seems like the most power on a CVT was put on by Audi with their 3.0 TDI engines. It was in the Audi A4 and also the A6, their CVT was called Multitronic.
