Started 2 weeks, my head unit (2018 Si) would sometimes display a message for map updates at startup.
The message says to visit Garmin website.

Do you guys see this message?

It happened for my Civic Hatch, you just have to go to https://hondanavi.navigation.com/home/en_US/HondaNA/USD and see if your car is still eligible for an update. My modal and year says it has 5 years of updates. Got the USB ready but requires you to leave the car running for an hour.... gonna do it when I go for a long drive.

I found it only takes about 10-15 mins so you can just have the ignition on while it updates

Thanks. I will check.
Does the 5-year warranty apply to Canada as well?

What 5-year warranty? The MapCare is complimentary for the first 5 years then you gotta pay after that.

Not sure what is MapCare.

I followed the link. It first took me to a Honda site; I entered my model/year, then it directed me to a Garmin site. It then asked me to download Germin Express. This looks like an app, did you have to install this app to your Civic?

Garmin Express is used to download the maps to a USB stick which you then use to update the head unit.

Thanks for the instructions.

Below is what I gathered from the instructions:
(I am concerned that any misstep would brick the head unit)

1. Get a 16GB USB and format it to FAT32.
2. Plug this USB into any USB port of the Civic.
3. In Navigation screen, click Device -> Travel History --> OK.
4. Wait 60 seconds and check for Complete message.

5. Remove the USB and plug into a laptop
6. Open Garmin Express and add a device
7. Optional: Add email address to register the product.
8. Enter nickname
9. Click Install
10. Accept T&C, then click Continue

11. Turn on the Civic
12. Remove USB from laptop and plug it into the same port s Step-2
13. In Navigation screen, click Settings --> Device --> Update Map --> Yes to continue
14. Verify maps were installed successfully

Questions:
1.. Do I have to install Garmin Express to my laptop separately?
2. In Step-6 (Add Device), it asks for the Serial Number. Is this the VIN?
3. I am in Canada. Does this map include Canada?

  1. Yes you have to install Garmin Express as that is the program that downloads the map update and writes it to the flash drive.
  2. It should pull that value from the flash drive. I didn't have to enter any VIN.
  3. The link was for US. You might need to check https://www.honda.ca/owners/honda-services/navigation for more info. But you can also just try the steps for US and see what maps it prompts to update. Worst case it only provides you US maps.
Basically the steps are:
  1. Get a formatted Flash Drive at least 16gb
  2. Insert it into the civic
  3. Go to Navigation -> Settings -> Device -> Update Map (all the way down)
  4. Shut the car off and remove when it says its done (the car writes a config file to the flash drive)
  5. Plugin in the usb to your computer
  6. Install Garmin Express
  7. Follow instructions and at the step to add device, it should find the proper maps from the flash drive
  8. Follow the instructions to install map data to the flash drive
  9. Insert the drive into the car and go back to update Map
  10. Maps should start to install (haven't actually installed it yet.

Just did the final part of the update, installing the new maps into the head unit. It only took like 25 minutes (enough time to go get some gas for the snow blower). Not too bad.

I called Honda Canada and they call-forwarded my call to Garmin. Garmin confirmed that the North America map would include Canada.

He said the last step (actually update) would take an hour and the car has to be running while performing this update. Also, there is no way to back out the change.

dj2819: Thanks. I will follow your instructions. Does all the steps have to be performed within 24 hours?

Getting the flash drive ready I think takes the longest part, it depends on how fast your internet is and copying those files to the flash drive. The actual install took less than a hour (about 30 minutes for me).

I think the part that might need to be done in 24 hours is:
  1. Copying the maps info from the car
  2. Installing the maps onto the flash drive through Garmin Express
After I got the flash drive prepped, I only actually updated the maps 2 days later and it worked.
