Not a big coffee guy. :)

Although just to confirm I am primarily experiencing issues when I plug in my iPhone and it crashing about two (2) minutes and displaying "No Device Connected" (although it will continue to play music, etc. but I can no longer interact with it and my HeadUnit does not recognize any device being connected. If I restart my iPhone it works flawlessly (as far as I can recall).

Bluetooth playback has also worked great and I don't know that I have any major issues using it.

I'll let you all know what happens tonight with a "clean" iPhone 6+. Interesting thought it might be "+" related. Anyone else confirm or deny.

That's exactly what's happening to me. I'll find that once a use the rear backup camera or lane assist, it starts to go on the fritz, or if I'm just driving for the first couple minutes, it starts flickering, becoming unresponsive, etc. The audio still plays usually (unless it gets all distorted and crashes). If I can make it like 2 minutes in, I'm golden.

Here is a partial, but incomplete, yet somewhat encouraging updating on what I have found so far...

I completed restored my iPhone 6+ and started from scratch in terms of installing apps and making setting changes.

To make a long story shorter, I have re-installed all my apps but made very few setting changes, other than the ones necessary to get CarPlay up and running (Siri, etc.) and have yet to have a "No Device Connected" "crash." CarPlay has worked better than it ever has since upgrading to iOS 10.

Today I enabled TouchID and Bluetooth, two features that were rumored to be causes of CarPlay woes in the past and it still worked flawlessly on my way to work this morning. I was able to listen to an audiobook by way of Audible for the 30+ minutes ride into work - and this included several "right turns" where the passenger side camera was used.

However...

I suspect I might have a ticking bomb on my hands as I have not enabled my 36000+ music library yet NOR have I enabled Location Services.

As it stands right now I am able to access the 2000+ songs that I have purchased through the iTunes Store but I cannot access or see the remaining 34000+ songs in my Apple Music library. I have been trying all day to enable my iCloud Music Library but continually receive a "iCloud Music Library can't be enabled" message. From reading online elsewhere, this seems to be a Apple side server issue and at some point it will magically enable and stay enabled. At that point it would not surprise me if CarPlay returns to displaying the "No Device Connected" message after two minutes. But I have my fingers crossed it will not.

However, if this turns out to be true, then it confirms my suspicions that CarPlay isn't happy with Apple Music, and specifically large Apple Music libraries which I suspect, for most, is not the norm. This would explain why others have had little issues with CarPlay because they have a relatively small Apple Music Library or do not use Apple Music at all.

But what my 2+ days of experiments does prove to some degree is I am not facing a total Civic 2016 Touring / iPhone6+ incompatibility like I was fearful I was. And if re-enabling my Music Library causes things to fail once again, I don't know that it clears who the finger of blame should be pointed at, be it Honda or Apple. I suspect it might still be a little of both. But what it would clear up is a potential root cause...at least in my situation.

And I don't want to enable Location Services at the same time as enabling my Apple Music Library so for now I am going to leave them disabled. But that also means no CarPlay maps but that is OK for now. But I am less fearful that Location Services is the cause since almost every iPhone user would have this feature enabled and therefore those that have chimed in on this, and other, threads, saying that CarPlay works for them likely have Location Services enabled. And this is likely a feature that Apple / Honda tested versus testing with a large Apple Music library.

I'll post an update when I finally get Apple Music re-enabled.

Thank you for this. Very encouraging. I tried a multitude of things and so far the only thing that has shown SOME consistency for me is to start the car up without the phone plugged in, immediately reboot the head unit and once it loads, plug in the phone which is already unlocked and open to the app I want to use. This has worked for me and while there might be a bit of stuttering for a few seconds, it seems to work great for the duration of my trip, even if I turn on the lane assist or rear backup cameras.

I personally don't think it has anything to do with Bluetooth because I've tried turning off Bluetooth on my phone and removing any connection from Bluetooth to the car and the issues still happens. (It also disables Bluetooth automatically once Carplay is on so kind of moot.

On a side note - I actually emailed Tim Cook about my displeasure with CarPlay the other day and his executive team is calling me this week to learn more about the issues so maybe this will get the attention it deserves.

UPDATE - it's working flawlessly now thanks to Apple.

As I mentioned, I emailed Tim Cook about how disgusted I was at the CarPlay experience. Someone from his Executive Services team got back to me and was amazing. Gave him tons of information on the issue and it seems that Apple is aware of the problem because he asked me to turn off iCloud Music Library and try it again. Apparently that is causing a bug, especially if you are like me and have a large library (I have almost 30K songs in my library). By disabling iCloud Music Library, CarPlay works like a dream now. Buttery smooth, no stuttering at all, never disconnects and switching from lane assist/backup camera no longer crashes the system.

Now it sucks that I have to disable iCloud Music Library since I use that daily, but at least the cause of this headache, at least for Honda's, seems to be identified and hopefully fixed. There's an iCloud Tier 1 support rep contacting me later today to get some more information on the problem so hopefully they can address this quickly in a software update.

I have been driving my 2017 EX for a couple weeks now, and I have had almost no problems with CarPlay and my iPhone 6+. Everything loads fine, Maps works great, and I can even use Sirius and Apple Maps at the same time which is pretty sweet.

Anyone have issues with Podcasts crashing though? Sometimes I'll be driving and my Podcasts App will seem to crash or turn off after 20~ minutes. I have to go back to the Podcasts app in the CarPlay dashboard and resume it manually. Annoying...

I've been listening to a lot of podcasts but I don't use the Apple Podcasts app. Use PocketCasts or Overcast - both are vastly superior to Apple's Podcasts and their CarPlay apps work wonderfully.

Great news. And optimistic that we are close to a resolution. Thanks for the update.

For the record, and as expected, when I re-enabled my music library, CarPlay starting having problems again.

I am also reluctant to keep it off so, for now, I am going to use Bluetooth to play music and stay away from CarPlay until it is working better.

Do keep us posted on your progress and with anything else that Apple says.

Apple call me back tonight to see how it was doing. I told them that it was working flawlessly with iCloud music library disable. They told me the error is on Honda's side and they've found the issue and are working closely with them to get it pushed out in a Honda service update. No ETA unfortunately but at least they pinpointed the cause.

I'm excited to hear this.

I've been having the same problem since I got my Civic and it's been driving me nuts. CarPlay disconnects all the time. Sometimes it happens a few minutes into driving and sometimes it won't connect in the first place when I plug my iPhone in. The problem didn't resolve itself when I switched from a 6S to a 7, nor did it resolve itself when I updated from iOS 9 to iOS 10 (or any of the point releases). It hasn't gone away at all and I could never tell if it was a problem on Apple's end or on Honda's.

On top of that, I've also noticed a problem with the Music app where a song that I have in my library will show up as something I don't have (i.e. it displays the "+" below the song title on the screen). And when I hit the "+" to add it from Apple Music, the symbol disappears (indicating that the song has been added to my library) but then a few second later, the "+" reappears, once again meaning that it doesn't think this song is in my library, even though it is.

I'm hoping these issues are fixed soon, but they seem to be taking an awfully long time, which has been frustrating.

Love this news. I might try dialing my iCloud music library and just stick with Apple Music to see how that works until there is an update. Thanks for fighting the good fight.

This might be a bit premature, but I turned off my iTunes Music Library and it's been two days now. I haven't had any of the issues I was having before. This makes me hopeful a firmware fix will solve these issues.

I think many of us have come to the same consensus and it has been confirmed by Apple...

...that music libraries of a certain / unknown size cause problems. My wife, for example (I think) has less than 2000 and her phone worked great in my car. I have 36000+ and have problems but if disabled it works great.

In the meantime I am using Bluetooth and listening to Audiobooks.

Fingers crossed that Honda fixes this soon

Let me see if i understood your process:

1. Restore iphone to factory settings (not restoring the data backup)
2. manually install apps.

this is encouraging indeed. please keep us posted. i will do that this weekend and report back.
