- 2019 Civic Hatchback Sport Touring Manual
I just got the HondaHack Pro at the beginning of the week after seeing this latest update, which is what finally got me to go for it. Here is my personal opinion.
In summary, to be honest, I regret getting it and really feel like it was pretty much a complete waste of money for me. I don't have any tuning to my vehicle and don't use it for any tuner apps or anything like that.
In detail, here is why. Keep in mind I have a 2019 Civic HB Touring.
First and foremost the fact that you can access the rear camera is super neat and what really drove me to finally jump on it and get the hack. However, it has some really major flaws. If I operate the right signal (or push the side view camera button) or put the car in reverse while rear-view camera is on, the whole unit gets stuck on the side-view or rear-view(for reverse) camera now. I can eventually unfreeze it but it takes a long time and requires my intervention. The last update is apparently suppose to avoid this issue but it's not working in my case. Therefore I have to make sure I deactivate the rear-view camera before using any other. This is a huge letdown for me.
Second thing I thought was quite neat was the intro video when starting the car. Theres two issues with this. One, the video is laggy, which is understandable since the unit is booting up and CPU is loaded. But that's not the deal breaker for me. The second and bigger issue is that it switches the Audio Source to App Audio if playing video sound and so I have to switch back to the source I was listening before (such as Radio) every single time i start the car. Major PITA!!!
Third, I wanted to be able to play videos on Youtube. Not for me to watch while driving, but many times I want to share a video with the passenger(s) by asking them to look it up, or when we are in parking lot, or I might just want to listen to the audio of the video (such as lookup a music video). First issue here is that Youtube is useless since it requires Google Services and with Google Services installed the head unit goes to shit. So you can't really install either. There is the lite version app of youtube and that works fairly well. But the problem I have with that is if you are watching while your driving, anytime you signal right or go into reverse (camera image comes on screen), the video cuts out and so does the audio. This makes it virtually unusable while driving unless you are on and empty highway.
Fourth, it described adding navigation instructions in-dash for apps like Waze. I thought, sweeeet! Only to realize that only works if you are using an app installed on HU, not through apple carplay. I don't want to install Waze on the HU as I prefer it through Carplay. So yet again another neat feature that I can't really use.
The fifth and last straw for me, my head unit randomly froze this morning showing Honda symbol on screen and not going away. The unit was actually still functioning in the background since I could start my radio, but nothing else was working and I couldn't perform a restart or access any function what so ever. Camera's wouldn't come on either. I went back to my car at lunch and the unit had somehow recovered. I ran through all the optimization options and it seems to launch smoothly and everything works ok again.
So ya, essentially almost every single option/feature that I was looking for in HondaHack is bugged, either to the point that it's completely useless to me or hugely limited/impaired.
The only thing that really works perfect and I do like, is the automatic OK on the warning screen to eliminate it from showing. But 30USD just to remove that warning... i would've passed if it was just for that.
