Is the engine cover necessary?

Just curious if the engine cover that comes on the k20c1 is needed for anything? I’m not a fan of it and want to just paint my valve cover. It just reminds me too much of a VW when I pop the hood. I’m sure it’s just there for cosmetics and to cover up wires and what not, but I just want to be sure before I remove it and hang it up in the garage.

As you said, it covers wires and stuff. So it does do something.

Basically cosmetic. Plenty run without one.

Side note, took my mint S2000 to a car show and lost the best Honda award to the only other Honda at the show - a crappy 10th Gen Si with a type r engine cover. Never went to another show. 🤣

Alright just wanted to make sure it wasn’t like a heat shield or water guard or something else vital. It’s coming off. Thanks for the help everyone.

Be even more funny if the guy that won the award was on the forum.

It seems water intrusion is an issue even with the cover in place. That being said, after inspecting my own, it appears that it is just a visual dress up part rather than providing any kind of protection. If anything, it holds more heat in above the valve cover...although it doesn't have any type of insulation under it so it might be minimal. I removed mine simply because I check plugs on a fairly regular basis...

The Spoon FK8 makes do without one. So I suppose you should be ok.

And to keep things attractive without the cover, the Spoon car runs it’s own cam cover which is essentially a stock cam cover painted gloss yellow.

The Type-R has a common problem where rain water gathers in the spark plug wells and causes the plugs and coils to rust. Removing the cover might actually make this more likely.

It'll depend on the kind of climate you're in though I suppose.

Canadian west coast, so it rains about 200 days a year…. Might reconsider it then.

Just wondering for daily driver usage, car also sits outside in the driveway all year round. It’s not a garage queen that sees only summer weather.
