Just installed new rims (18x8.5 +35mm) on the stock tires (235/40/18r) and I noticed a decent amount of road noise now. Is it because of the rims? or do I need new tires?

What's the mileage on your tires right now?

Probably need a new set of tires.

did your original wheels have those noise deadening pieces on them? Also did you get an alignment after transferring the tires to the new wheels?

Not sure if they had the deadening pieces, but I did not get an alignment after

do they appear to be chopping or oddly worn in anyway?

Heres a picture of the deadening pieces

If you have vibration as well it needs balancing.
If no vibration & on stock tires (with 24k miles like you said) it’s the tires. Any and all tires become louder as they age.

The stock tires especially quickly.

I wouldn’t doubt it, but didn’t get there personally lol. Swapped wheels and tires with the stock ones only having 4K miles one them, they look just as new as they day I bought the car ?

Are the tires in the same location or randomly rotated? Are the wheels much lighter? I feel like my 17lb wheels increase road feel, and maybe noise, as if the heavy stock wheels act as dampers.

No need for alignment if you're replacing rims or tires, just balancing.

By 8k when I ditched them, the noise, traction, and ride quality were considerably worse.

Alignment would not be affected by a wheel/tire change. You must mean balancing.
