What are they supposed to fix? It is possible to remove the bolts without breaking anything. I did it the other day when installing a new downpipe. I'm not that experienced with stuff but with patience, research, and some tools it's completely possible and not difficult. I'm not trying to argue or be a dick but I don't see what Honda can "fix" given the factors the bolt and stud are exposed to daily while driving.

About 20 minutes before removing the bolts I soaked them with WD-40 Penetrating oil. I did it twice every 10 minutes. Then right before attempting to remove them I soaked them one more time and used a breaker bar (just a pipe) and held the wrench steady with one hand and pulled the bar with the other. I think you're more likely to break the stud if you bend the wrench while attempting to break it loose. You NEED to make sure you keep it straight and steady, don't bend it at all. It's common sense.

Here is a surefire method to remove the downpipe bolts, nuts and studs without snapping them off.

I’ve used this on much more stubborn equipment in a power plant, when I was a mechanic.... but didn’t get to confirm on the downpipe hardware until today.

You will need some Kroil or similar rust penetrant

first spray some kroil on the threads and bolts. There are (2) bolts that are threaded directly into the Turbo housing and (2) nuts threaded on studs. Be sure to spray some kroil through the (2) backside holes in the turbo housing. Let sit for about (10) minutes

For the threaded bolts, apply heat evenly to the turbo housing where the threads engage, circled in blue. Do this for about (1) minute. The kroil will smoke off. Does not need to get red hot. This will make it expand.

Immediately spray the bolt head only with the freeze spray for 5-10 seconds. This will make it contract.

With it still hot, quickly use a 14mm socket and breaker bar and apply even steady pressure to break it free. At this point the external housing is hot (expanded) and the internal bolt thread is cooler (contracted).... A variation of the ball passing easily through the heated ring trick in physics....:cool:

If the bolt doesn't move and you are pulling hard, Stop. Repeat this process and try again. Always apply pressure perpendicular to the plane and try to keep force as close to the fastener as possible. Avoid pulling from extended, offset angles unless absolutely need to. The lower and rear fasteners may require a 14mm deep socket.

For the (2) nuts, simply heat the nut for about (30) seconds. Try to hit all sides to make it expand evenly.

If this works, does it mean that there is nothing wrong with that "right corner stud", like there aren't any wrong threads on it? You should have taken a picture of that stud in its perfect stage. I will do catless dp as soon as there is one guaranteed of error-code free out there!!

Are you referring to these (2) body bound studs? I am replacing all with Rampage Ti studs and will remove these also. Will double nut and cinch them, heat the area around the stud, cool the stud then remove it using the lower nut. Will take some pics when get to it. Right now am finishing putting my wife’s front bumper back on ?

As you can see, the turbo blades are a good distance from any heat affected zone, but still don’t use excessive heat. Do not heat until it glows, heh. Not needed. Only freeze shock the studs. ;)

great write up. Detailed and filled with pictures! I will be following your instruction when I get my titanium rampage hardware in just to ensure no broken studs. It would have been nice if I knew there was issues with factory studS prior to dp install but I am thankful you have provided a great solution. Hopefully Honda fixes issue for future turbo models but seems like rampage titanium hardware along with this write up for removal will be a great solution for 16-19 10th gen turbo civics.

Wanted to replace the (2) studs that are threaded into the turbo housing with Rampage ti hardware as part of the downpipe install.... attempted to remove the top one and ran into problems.

Used my handy dandy heating/cooling/kroil technique and the stud initially moved and backed out several turns. Then it got really hard. Tried heating and cooling several times and couldn’t get it. Would have snapped if applied any more pressure....

Gave up and attempted to remove the nuts, but the inner nut would not come off. :doh:

Used a grinder and cut off wheel and carefully chopped up the nut In several places, without touching the stud, so it could be safely removed.

Just went deep enough to see the threads then stopped.

Fortunately, there enough good threads remaining to reuse the stud. Dunno why it galled so badly. In hindsight, should have applied anti-seize before trying to back the studs out. Ah well.

Thought a washer would be needed to provide space to reach the good threads but turned out not needed. Dodged a bullet, ?

Really want to add the Rampage hardware.... but to do so now, would need to pull the turbo and machine the studs out and dress the threads... on the fence whether it’s worth the trouble.

Circled back to remove the 3rd turbo housing stud because had trouble installing the new down pipe with it in the way. Used the double nut method + heat + freezing. Re-used the original nuts, but recommend using brand new nuts to minimize the possibility of the nuts galling.

Used (2) combo wrenches to cinch the nuts to each other and lock them onto the stud, close to the turbo housing.

Stud broke loose and backed out. Sprayed with kroil and worked it back and forth to make sure it didn’t get stuck. Hit it with freeze spray to keep the stud from heat soaking.

Reviving an old thread since I'll be installing a downpipe soon. Is it recommended to pick up new studs and nuts just in case? I was looking at the rampage ones since the oem ones are made of swiss cheese. If one does snap, is it an easy screw out and screw the new one in? I'm seeing drilling and re tapping involved..

Maybe it's just me, but I would never re-use nuts/bolts/studs that are either critical or a PITA to get to.
New ones don't cost that much in the greater scheme of things.
I recommend buying them.

Go for the Rampage titanium hardware kit and save yourself any future hassle just be prepared to possibly drill and tap, remove damaged stud and nut. You’re on the right path researching first!

BTW, @fatherpain is that your wife or your car with that sexy valve cover?

Since this thread is still kicking I may add Rampage install to go with fatherpain’s removal instructions……. to be continued.
Anyone else have any repeat problems with the suspect hardware? Just to update this thread? I’ll check Honda TSB’s to see if they ever did anything and report back…
