It makes you stop for a second and realize how much youā€™ve really invested doesnā€™t it. Doesnā€™t stop me from mods as I always keep a folder for the receipts. ?

Yeah, I put $4500 in my '17 EX hatch and when I did the lease turn in, it actually appraised at +$2k. They ended up giving me +$6.5k when I accepted the '20 ST at the same price I paid for my EX. This one is modded a bit more extremely than my first one, so I'll be buying it out.

My Touring was, for me, the most expensive DD Iā€™ve ever bought at just under $31k before taxes and such back in July 2018.
I enjoy it immensely.
There were some upgrades done and all with used components because Iā€™m too German to pay full pop for parts that Iā€™d be damn lucky to get half my money back on when I sell.
Iā€™ve upgraded to a set of used Sport hatchback 18ā€ wheels & new tires bought at Costco with further employee discount coupons and sold the original 17ā€™s to offset all but $200 of the upgrade cost.
I upgraded to a used Si rear sway bar bought from a member on here, selling the original to a local kid who wanted to change out the unit on his base model.
Thatā€™s right, Iā€™m a frugal bastard who buys used stuff because Iā€™m cheap.
Also added a used KTuner for poop and laughter and had the windows tinted which is SOP for me.
I donā€™t see vehicle mods as any sort of ā€œinvestmentā€ because investments increase make you money over time.
Vehicle mods donā€™t do that.
I find it completely ridiculous to stick a ton of money into a depreciating asset such as a vehicle.

They came down on the ST because I traded in my '18 ex hatch with $4500 in mods. They knew they could resell it for >$23k after already having gotten my lease payments for 2 years on it. The deal came when the lots first emptied as an effect of COVID, so they really wanted my trade in, and I wasn't going to for another EX just to start over. They sold it in a week for $24500.

What mods did you do on the ā€˜18 hatch ex? I see a lot of people here selling the part outs from their cars going back to stock because theyā€™re trading it in which made me think dealers wouldnā€™t pay more for modded cars. Is it preferred OEM on the car? For me Iā€™d sell it private or attempt to trade it in modded (see if they will go up) since I have taken it to shops for the installation. So Iā€™d be losing more money by installing it off. Once I get my numbers down plus how much I paid for shops to install Iā€™ll add my mods on here.

On the '18, I replaced the door speakers with JL audio components, added a JL amp and sub ($2k), replaced all interior amd exterior lighting with LED ($400), tinted all windows with ceramic tint ($800), blacked out the trim and badges, swapped to OEM 'upgrade' black wheels ($1200), and replaced the steering wheel and shift knob with '20 ex leather versions ($300). Timing played a factor and they had to make the decision whether to put it back to stock to be able to sell it as certified, or sell as is. They sold as-is and made a profit on it.

These were minimalistic mods compared to my '20, which I'm sure they'll probably not argue with letting me buy out. I have a year left so if the inventories start coming back, they'll likely reduce the value due to the current mods. I have no intention of trading it though. I'll never get the same deal.

If I decide I want a new car, I'll sell it private party but even then it would have to be to someone who "appreciates" the work because I'm not taking it back to stock and parting out the mods. I still have wheels from my black one I can't give away!
