Yep, it can vary slightly based on what county you live in, but they charge you based on the value of the car. From what I've heard (I could be wrong), Louisiana is similar but would cost about half of what I pay here. I've owned cars in FL & AL, and it's pennies to register your car there in comparison.

Edit: so next year when I renew the tag it'll probably be just under $1k.

For comparison, a few years ago I had a 05' RX-8 and the tag would usually cost no more than $40

Around $2200 since sales tax isn’t paid on your car until you get plates. Last time I buy a car in Missouri!

I can't believe they expect you to pay the sales tax in a lump sum like that on a financed car. Makes zero sense to me.

So when you say Tag you actually mean the license plate? I thought you meant a vehicle tracking/theft prevention system.

In Ontario Canada the plate is $50, or $300 something for customized ones, and renewal is $120/year or $60/year if you live in north rural areas. But sales tax is 13% even on used cars.

Currently it costs 151 dollars in Illinois, though dealership fee is 300. Obviously depends on state. Some do it based on vehicle value.

Here in Calif*ckya when I bought my Si Coupe last October the tags were $398. Since Jerry Brown had his second go around at screwing the state a few years ago, tags rather than going down every year, they go up every year. Since Newsom took over (AKA "Little Hitler in hair gel") yearly renewal of ones registration tags keep going up. Again & again & again.... Hopefully our pending recall election will be effective in removing his dumbass from office. If you would like to know how I really feel? ..Just ask..?
