I know some run a fumito valve but I've read some things about those that makes me paranoid to run one - so those that do it as it sits - in their garage - how do you not get oil jetting everywhere under the car when you release the drain bolt?

I was armed with a funnel this time as well and it still got me it's like high pressure?

I took the filter out first - caught the drippings - was off to a banging start.

Then the oil drainbolt - ARGGH

Now I have a big mess to clean after I finish. Any tips?

Oil in these is like water. Not much you can do to limit the splash. But I've had no issues doing my own.

Yeah, the oil is so thin it pretty much just shoots out. I position drain pan pretty far back to catch the initial flow and then move it a little toward the end.

Not sure how much difference it really makes, but I do drain plug first; then filter. If you leave oil cap and filter in place, the oil may flow out just a tad slower.

MityVac fluid evacuator.

If you get it in to the oil pan just right, it’ll drain it almost completely. You can put it up on stands after and pull the drain plug if you like, only about a shot glass worth more comes out over a few minutes of dripping.

Yeah but man the dealership techs and my car? All kinds of things can go wrong. It's not hard to do, just a bit messy so was looking for options.

What's your setup then? What do you use to catch the oil? I have some flat deal I got at an auto parts store but it's short so catching is hit or miss depend on where it shoots out to lol.

Put on latex gloves. Spin the drain bolt until you know it's off the threads, but keep it pushed into the hole. Oil will start slowly dripping onto your gloved hand. Pull the plug as quickly as you can back away from the hole. Oil will go cleanly into the drain pan, which as @RedGiant217 said you have pushed farther away to catch the stronger intial flow, then slowly move it closer as it turns to a drip.

Have some paper towels handy to wipe your hand. I can usually do it with zero drops on the floor about 75% of the time. The other 25%, I get careless and drip a few drops. No biggie, paper towel wipes it up. Good luck!

I use an 18" x 26" commercial dough tray I use to drain fluids.. it's like 3.5" high and so wide, hold many quarts of fluid. Well worth the $25

I remember to open the hood and slightly open the oil cap. Then raise it up. Then put the 8 gallon 18” oil drain under it.
The key is how much open the oil cap. Keep it on and it’s going to juice all over the place. Take it all the way off it’s going to shoot.

I take the filter off first maybe that's what gives it 4000 PSi - I'll try a different method - thanks for the tips all

Highly recommend a Fumoto F106 drain valve. Gamechanger. Easy and clean. Have had (5) track days and about 25000 miles on it. No leaks.

Use a ziplock plastic bag to remove the oil filter and catch the residual oil.

I drain oil and filter residual directly to this style of bucket. Not going to use catch pans anymore.

Because the bucket has a sealable lid. Can then transport it to the auto parts store and dump it :)
