Great question! I'm from Socal so we don't have animal problems, but we get a lot of motorcycles here. From my experience, it's not reliable as I think it's made to sense cars only.

*deer. No, it won't do that. Only vehicles.

Come to think of it... I wonder how well it would do following motorcycles?

From the Honda website "
DRIVING
Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™)*
Can assist you when there is a possibility of your vehicle colliding with a vehicle or a
pedestrian detected in front of yours."

So if it can detect a Pedestrian, it should pick up a deer I would think.

Mine alerted when I got close to a bike in my garage but there was a shelf there also, who knows

Additional info:

"The system activates when:
•
The speed difference between your vehicle and a vehicle or pedestrian detected
in front of you is about 3 mph (5 km/h) and over with a chance of a collision.
•
Your vehicle speed is about 62 mph (100 km/h) or less and there is a chance of a
collision with an oncoming detected vehicle or a pedestrian in front of you.

Alert Stages
The system has three alert stages for a possible collision. Depending on the
circumstances or CMBS settings, CMBS may not go through all of the stages
before initiating the last stage.
Stage 1:
Visual and audible warning, steering wheel vibrations
Stage 2:
Visual and audible warning and light brake application
Stage 3:
Visual and audible warning and strong brake application

Changing Settings
Determine the warning timing.
1.
From the HOME screen, select Settings.
2.
Select Vehicle. The vehicle must be in Park (P).
3.
Select Forward Collision Warning Distance.
4.
Select Long, Normal, or Short.
5.
Press BACK to exit the menu"

Hunter is correct.. It will pick up bikes.. However, real life application is pretty spotty.

If real life application is spotty is sensing even worth it?

Still mulling over getting a bare bones EX or an EX with sensing

Owner manual lists "Animals in front" as a detection limitation of ACC (in red below)...

Here's the excerpt:

Detection limitations

• A vehicle or pedestrian suddenly crosses in front of you.
• The distance between your vehicle and the vehicle or pedestrian ahead of you is
too short.
• A vehicle cuts in front of you at a slow speed, and it brakes suddenly.
• When you accelerate rapidly and approach the vehicle or pedestrian ahead of you
at high speed.
• The vehicle ahead of you is a motorcycle, bicycle, mobility scooter, or other small
vehicle.
• When there are animals in front of your vehicle.
• When you drive on a curved or winding or undulating road that makes it difficult
for the sensor to properly detect a vehicle or a pedestrian in front of you.
• The speed difference between your vehicle and a vehicle or pedestrian in front of
you is significantly large.
• An oncoming vehicle suddenly comes in front of you.
• Your vehicle abruptly crosses over in front of an oncoming vehicle.
• When driving through a narrow iron bridge.
• When the vehicle ahead of you brakes suddenly.
• When the vehicle ahead of you has a unique shape.
• When your vehicle or the vehicle ahead of you is driving on one edge of the lane.

If you do any amount of highway driving, you will appreciate ACC and LKAS. Plus there's the awesome factor. :D

The Lane Departure warning, Lane Keep Assist, and Cruse control work very well with some getting used to well worth the price. I'm still trying to get used to the Collision Avoidance. Have had issue when a car in front turns off the road to the right. When I go to pass them the system Jammed on the brakes unexpectedly, it must see them as still in the lane in front of the car until it the other car is well off the road.

It makes me nervous driving down Main Street with cars parked on the side of the road and people looking to cross the road. I feel like the car is going to see one of the cars or people and jam on the brakes at any minute. I hasn't done it yet but knowing it's their looking at everything make you extra careful.

Yup, and just like any technology, nothing is 100% and manufacturers always put extra cautious wording in their print materials...

In my neck of the woods all I need to worry about are racoons!

On the road >45 mph, ACC very accurate. Warning note to all: When approaching a stop light, brake or cancel. Why: if a vehicle slows and then pulls into a driveway close to the light, the car will accelerate as soon as the vehicle clears the Civic's forward looking camera. Collision avoidance works great when pulling into the space with an object in front of the vehicle like a wall or a post. Let's you know when you're getting close. Don't depend on Honda Sensing to avoid a human or an animal. It might work but it might NOT. I love my car but I don't tempt fate. It's just a computer not a brain.

I don't like the collision detection nor the lane assist. The collision detection slams on the brakes all the time, one time stopping my completely in the middle of the road. Think about a curvy road, a car is suddenly in front of your car heading towards you - it slams on the brakes. Of course, they're in their lane, and I'm in mine, the road curves, and they pass right by me exactly like they should. Honda says to turn it off if it's a curvy road. It's so bad I don't see how anyone would ever use it. The lane assist shakes the steering wheel even when I'm perfectly centered in the lane. Both features are junk in my opinion, and I think everyone will have these off. It's too bad I had to pay for these useless features.

Oh, and for those of you wondering if it will see animals - definitely. There was a dead skunk in the middle of the road, I headed for it, so it would go under without the tires hitting it, and I got the "BRAKE" warning, and a small jab of the brakes, then it released the brakes.
