Hey guys,

my Honda dealership used Mobil 1 ESP X3 0W-40 Dextos 2 on my last oil changes. Honda recommends 0W-20 or 0W-30 / 5W-30 for the 1.5 egine. 0W-40 does not meet the requirements.

So what do you think, is it good enough or should I go for another oil change?

One oil change costs 140 EUR by the way (170 USD / 216 CAD) by the way.

If it’s good enough for a $160k NSX, it should be good enough for a Civic.:)

Don't think you will run into much of an issue.

You should ask them. They might screwed just it up and then I'm sour you don't have to pay for the extra oil change. I really don't know why whould they put 0w40 engine oil in your car. And why during winter. Not because of the "0w" part, but the "40". The oil needs 15-20 km of driving to reach the operating temperature in cold weather.
I don't know what can happen if you put such thick oil in your 1.5T, for some time probably nothing. Just ask them. Btw. my Honda dealer always uses 5w30 Shell ACEA C3.

Why should you use 0w-40? The european manuals says: "use 0w-20 genuine honda oil (type 2.0), if genuine oil is not available, use 0w-30 or 5w-30".

0w-40 is not even listed there

He did not want to use it, but the dealership used it probably without asking (I assume).

I'll ask them, I'm driving the 0W-40 for approximately 16,000 km / 10,000 miles now.

15-20 km to reach operating temperature is not good for my purposes. I'm doing a lot of short trips in winter with only 6 or 7 kilometers, mostly stop and go traffic.

Hm... I know it's not a helpful comment but for such short distances a hybrid toyota would be the best solution.

But if you keep driving the Civic like this then I would recommend the followings:
- Use the original 0w20 oil (or maybe a good 0w30 would also be OK)
- Change the oil twice a year, but max 10-12t km
- Drive it for a longer distance every once in a while and rev it when the oil is warm

I don't think that during this 16t km anything happened with the engine but using the wrong oil for a longer time cause some serious problems (like in case of the more-or-less famous Toyota 1NR-FE fiasco) and our cars even have a turbo.

A fully electric vehicle would be an even better solution that case. But I want to keep the Civic. I'm also doing longer trips from time and as I said, it's just on some winter days, with these extreme short trips.

I'll ask the dealer next time, will make an update-post about what he says about the 0W-40 oil.

If you have it on record, I would keep that record nearby.
A Honda dealership going against Honda recommended oil viscosity feels like a "yellow-flag".
I would call them up and question them, Honda clearly recommended what should be used, and going against it would put them in a big liability risk.

If they have any integrity and risk awareness, they would call you back and give you a proper oil change, no charge, with the correct viscosity.

I'm not familiar with the details on this paricular engine's fiasco, but I know that Toyota put some fiasco piston rings in their engines around that time. Then they had a problem with repairing huge numbers of cars because of oil consumption issues.

If Toyota said the piston ring failures or increased oil consumption were due to owners using 30 or 40 weight oil instead of 20 weight, Toyota was shamelessly lying to confuse the issue and avoid responsibility.

After saying that, I have to also add that the panic about excessive oil consuption among many of the owners was much exaggerated.
