before i bought my 2018 civic i had an 05, i bought it brand new in 05, i live in cold climate and never turned the AC on all winter long,

the AC in that car was still working 100% fine when i sold the car 6 months ago, it had never once broke down or required any servicing
If you run the defroster it normally will also turn on the AC to dehumidify and prevent the windows from fogging up.

This is my first car with r134a instead of r12. Every make, year, model etc. has it's own quirks of course. However, it is the nature of chemistry and physics that the the refrigerant mixture in AC Compressors functions as lubricant and maintains seal health. If our defrost utilizes the AC on it's own... the thread should be closed. Otherwise, no one is saying there will be a premature failure for not running AC when it isn't hot.
