High cruising RPM

Going about 70 mph and engine RPM in 6th gear nearly 3000 RPM. Is that similar to others? Seems high but it is a smaller engine than I am used too. Just wanted to make sure my car was responding similar to others.

Sounds about right. Try driving a 5 speed Prelude at 70 in 5th. I'd hit 4,500 RPM on regular highway cruises. Nearly 3000 RPM is awesome on these cars!

yeah, normal for most every Honda 4 banger I’ve had, especially the Si’s. (This my 3rd Si) Weird to me in this one as hardly ever use 6th in daily driving as seems so high that I though it would be lower on the highway. Takes some getting use to but the thing still sees 40+ mpg at that speed.

In mine 70 pulls just shy of 2,800 rpm, 80 is a hair over 3k rpm, both in 6th. It’s a short top gear, that’s for sure. But the payoff is how quickly it accelerates even at part throttle. I routinely average 45+ doing 65 on the flat highways here in Illinois with the cruise control on. Honda Fit does about 4,400 rpm at 80 in 5th gear, so it could be worse

I concur I'm in Illinois too, and now that the summer blend of gas is here (has been but working from home more these days) my mileage to and from my office (38 miles each way, all expressway) has been crazy... I've done 75-80 and have gotten my best mileage ever this tank. I've gone in yesterday and today...

Looks like 2600 rpm on mine. 80 is a tad over 3000 rpm. I think that is good.

Yep, completely normal. For these little high-revving engines, 3k at cruising speed isn't even breathing hard.

Yes the Si in 6th gear runs lower RPMs than my previous 5-speed, 4-cylinder, 1.6L engines (Corolla, Integra). In those cars the RPMs in 5th gear were about 50x the miles per hour (3,000 RPM for 60 MPH, 3,500 RPM for 70 MPH, etc.).

Yup, you’re dead on man, I was wrong. It’s what I get for trying to remember when I’m not in the car. Just over 2,600 at 70, just over 3k at 80. Looks like about 400 rpm per ten mph in sixth gear. Unless I’m wrong again lol

RPM = (MPH x gear x final x 336)/tire diameter.

Assuming stock tires, close-enough math gets you to 25.4 inch diameter. Final drive = 4.11. 6th gear = 0.69.

At 70MPH your RPM is 2626.

It's completely normal.

My old EM1 use to be above 4k while cruising at 70MPH...lol
