Exact same thing happened to my 2019 recently. Front lip came off on freeway as I was accelerating onto the freeway from the on ramp. I took it to Honda and they obviously claimed I hit something, which I didn’t. I paid $700 for a new lip because after it blew off it essentially dragged forever.

Less than 10 days after the new lip was installed, I was on the freeway doing around 75-80, and it came off again. Although this time it came completely off, very fast. It also damaged my driver side tire well.

Honda is now replacing the lip for free and gave me employee pricing on the tire wells. They claim they are having a specialist do it on Friday. We shall see. I’ve owned this car for about 80 days.
I must check mine too. I don’t think they can stay in place at Autobahn speeds for a longer period of time...

Jesus, y'all paying $700+ dollars to replace a $50 part? https://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine/honda~grille~fr~bumper~lower~71102-tbf-a00.html?Make=Honda&Model=Civic&Year=2017&Submodel=&Filter=(bt=4,11;et=2,8)&Location=interior_bumper/front_bumper,3469816,2

Unless I'm looking at the wrong part. The fender liners are also only about $66
And that plastic piece the metal tray connects to it about $6

That's the real crime here lol. I will never understand why people defend dealerships when they will rip you off any chance they get.

There's a reason those front lip tie-rods are sold and have a market.
While I am skeptical about the amount of downforce produced by the factory sport lip being enough to rip it off the car, this is what I find amusing. Just because there is a market for something, doesn't mean it works. I mean, you're using the tie rod to attach it to another piece of plastic. Ideally, they should be attached to something rigid like the bumper beam to have any kind of strength.

Maybe the 2 piece sport lip is weaker by design than the 1 piece on the Si and the LX hatch, I could see the lip coming apart then. But there doesn't seem to be enough of the lip protruding out front to produce such a high pressure zone to rip it off while assuming was on securely.

Dealership did overcharge me but no that isn’t the part. It’s #3, which is listed for $377 on that site. After the first incident the Honda manager showed me their pricing for the part and it was $420. The grill part is much cheaper, this is that black trim piece that runs along the bottom of the car. I don’t know why it’s so much pricier than everything else.

And yes the tire wells I’m only being charged $25 for, those are cheap. It’s the “carbon fiber” trim that is outrageous and apparently can’t handle airflow.

TLDR: Civic Hatchback Sport front lip cannot take the repeated downforce created by sustained 100+mph cruising.
-
My 2017 Civic Hatchback Sport was in excellent condition. I've owned it since new and I am very anal about my cars. No dings, no scratches, no curbed wheels and I park very far away from other vehicles and curbs in every car I own. I live in Arizona, so it's actually very easy to park far from everyone else if you don't mind the exercise. The only reason I mention this is because I am certain my vehicle had no prior damage outside of rock chips.

I use the Civic as a commuter car and it does a LOT of freeway miles because my home is 30 miles one direction from where my office is. The car is 30 months old and it has 42,000+ miles on the odometer. In full disclosure, this car often experiences sustained speeds of 100+ mph (On the track). Yesterday, while cruising around 100mph (on the track) I felt and heard the front lip break away my front bumper. At the time there was nobody around me, and I had a clear view ahead, so I'm certain I did not run over anything or get impacted by anything. I pulled over and discovered that when the front lip clips pulled away from the brackets the bumper, it also ripped back a lot of the undercarriage plastic covers. The plastics protecting the underside of the Civic are also attached to the wheel well liners, and those were also destroyed and ripped away. The front lip breaking away at 100mph did a surprising amount of damage to the vehicle.

I wanted to share this because if there are other owners out there driving the piss out of their hatchback civic sport, you should install those tie-rods that reinforce the front lip.

Did you retrofit your headlights? or is that aftermarket headlights?

Just going to throw this in here, for anyone who has this happen, look at the ABSdynamics Type R style front lip as a more affordable replacement while making the car look nicer. If that's your style of course, the type R lip is not what everyone is looking for. They do have this for all the models except normal coupe and sedan, the Si's are the same front bumper as hatchback.

I got it for $200 shipped, and painting it gloss black cost me I think $150. At this point you're still under by $150! The abs lip replaces the under shield, lower grille and obviously the lip. You actually secure it to the new lower grille with screws to it feels much more stable than the other one. And the sides aren't connected so they wiggle a bit and don't generate too much downforce which would result in the same thing happening. I've been running this lip for like 10k miles with no issues, still feels nice and secure when I'm cleaning it.

Do you have a link for it?

Well it happened again. This is now the 3rd time. They installed the new lip on Friday morning. It lasted 5 days. I don't know what to do anymore. All 3 times this has happened on the same freeway, same direction, around 5:45 PM. For whatever reason it can't handle the airflow. There is clearly something flawed with the front of my car. Does anyone have any advice for me? I will call Honda in the morning and talk to them. Really starting to have buyer's remorse. I've only had this car for 90 days.

Wow! Take it to a different dealer to get it fixed this time! Although this has happened to a few people, to have it happen to both repairs in such a short time span it's obvious that it isn't being fixed properly.

I am pretty sure it's not fixed properly or something hit the lip and made the tabs come off. I drove my SI pretty hard at speeds of more than 100mph but my lip is like how it came from factory. Yes, I always park in reverse or keep my distance as the clearance is hardly 6inches from ground to part of the lip

I just check your posts on here in other categories and it seems like you purchased a used hatch. Maybe you bought it and the dealer didn’t tell you any abuse the previous owner gave it? It seems that you had a lot of trouble with that car after you’ve purchased it. I would go get a history or what other people say and get a thorough check at a more reputable dealer.

Yeah something isn't right. I put 70k on my old sport hatch with no issues. I've had the abs one on for like 5 months and it's seen some pretty serious speed with no issue. I agree with others maybe try another dealer. Or even take it apart and look yourself you might be able to see something!

You know what funny this just happened to me couple hours ago hit about 115 (open express) and pow! Thought I blew a tire started to skid a little and pulled off got out an looked and what do ya know.
I don’t know if this is from Honda or the collision center (was in a wreck about 1 year ago) so I don’t know if it was faulty after they replace the bumper or not. Either way I agree with the OP this is not meant for speed now I have to figure out a better aftermarket that will hold up better.
