Why does the HB get worse MPGs?

The HB Sport and Sport Touring even worse and premium fuel recommended (yes I realize it has 6 more hp).

Really wanted the HB Sport Touring, but 6 MPG's less on the highway and 4 MPG's less combined plus premium fuel is really making me lean towards the Sedan Touring.

2017 HB EX 40/31 and 34 combined
2017 HB Sport CVT and upcoming Sport Touring 36/30 and 32 combined & Premium fuel recommended

2017 Sedan EX 42/32 and 36 combined
2016 Sedan EX 42/31 and 35 combined

At this high MPG, aerodynamics are critical. The hatch is probably less aerodynamic, and the sport has heavy wheels that probably sap a little mpg.

Not a CivicX expert here, but a few things that can cause MPG variances in sub-models:

aerodynamics. The hatch has big, flat vertical surfaces on it's front end to look cool, may create drag.

tires. if the other models have different tires, that's a big hit.

gearing. ?? though they are probably the same.

weight. ?? probably to close in weight to matter.

Aerodynamics + gearing are the biggest factors IMO.

Not sure why the Sport is only 36 hwy though. I don't think the differences are that significant.

Are the sport tires different? I lost 3-4 MPG on my previous Maxima when I switched from stock 16" wheels with Michelin MXV4 and went to a 18" wheel with summer performance tires.

Wheel weight, tire width and rolling resistance make a big hit on MPGs

Keep in mind these 2 cars are identical mileage. 2016 uses 2016 EPA rating. 2017 uses new 2017 EPA rating.
Yes and it actually went up under the new rating system, which is great! Many thought based on numbers from the hatch and other cars like the 2017 Accord that numbers would go down on the Civic.

Yea I'm not suprised at all. I'm always 50+ mpg.

Many many cars from other manufactures went down quite a bit. I love my Civic!

For the Sport models, it's the CVT tuning. Notice that the Sport manual is rated the same as the base manual hatch. The CVT is tuned for more "sportiness" in the Sport trim level.

The non-Sport model differences probably come down to small aerodynamic differences.

The 2016 Civic window sticker says it is already based on 2017 EPA rating system, that's why mileage didn't go down.

I just don't know if the Hatch Sport CVT is a smart choice. Sure, the 18's and dual center tips and metal pedals look cool. But, MPG numbers are way down and to get the extra 6hp you need premium. I don't know of many sub 200hp engines that need premium these days, let alone in an economy car.

The Sport 6speed on the other hand seems like a great deal for those who don't care about Carplay and other extras.

Yeah, feeling the same way, thinking I could go EXL hatch....but for basically the same money, I could get a Touring sedan which has more bells and whistles over the EXL hatch and I kind of like the slightly more conservative styling of the Sedan.

Also, the 2017 sedan will be year 2 of production and the HB year 1, even though running gear is virtually the same, except the different tuned CVT in the Sport Touring

I'm not sure if that is true since the 2017 has different numbers but nothing changed. The honda website says the 2016 falls under 2016 EPA and 2017 falls under new 2017 EPA.

Regardless, the 2017 sedan CVT 1.5T went up in MPG's over the 2016 sedan CVT 1.5T
