I have been driving this SI for almost 3 years but I never get the hang of the handbrake. when I park, it would sometimes engage. When it engages, the handbrake light would not lit at times. How would I know?

I read that this has something to do with the seat belt. No idea why.

Do you guys know exactly what is the trigger?

Today I unbuckled my seat belt with the car still running and it automatically set my parking brake.

When this happened, did the little handbrake icon lit up in the instrumental cluster?

Pretty sure it's not. I've not tested this, but I've seen my e-brake applied a few times automatically. Plus the guy said he has a HB Sport Manual.

I never use the Brake Hold feature.
Still, when parked, the handbrake would sometimes engage by itself.

I tried it this morning in my Si. When “Brake Hold” is engaged and I undid my seatbelt it activated the E Brake.

You do have a point. I don't use Brake Hold either, but did tested it when I first got the car. And I am pretty sure I saw it auto engage after shutdown a few times but can't remember if I had brake hold on or not.

I think it automatically applies if you have brake hold on when you're stopped and unbuckle the belt. Not too sure on this but I know mine almost always automatically sets.

I tried it and it worked. The key triggers are BrakeHold and seatbelt release.
This is not useful for me because I never use BrakeHold.

I was hoping the ebrake would engage automatically when I park the car (when the engine start/stop is pressed).

If it always engaged no matter what, how would you deal with getting it towed? Unless it maybe had brake/hold on indefinitely until turning off? I would have much preferred an actual handbrake for this car. They can keep hill assist and all the rest, just give me a darn lever to pull.

I would not mind to release the handbrake when the car is towed. We park our cars multiple times per day and seldom we tow our cars!

Look like I have to train myself to put the car in gear when I park.

I see your point but if e-brake is mimicking the old hand brake, then the current way is more appropriate. Many ppl drive stick get into the habit of shifting in to gear, hand-brake (e-brake) when park anywyay. Not really a big deal for many.
