Good question. If you want to be extra careful, look for (or specifically request) pics like one posted here. You can see that the serial# on the physical device matches the serial# of the unlocked unit in the Ktuner software. I've also seen sellers post photos of the device next to a piece of paper listing the user's name and the date. This proves the seller actually has the unit in his/her possession, and isn't simply ripping pics off of google (which is a trick scammers have pulled here in the past). If you can get both types of photos posted together, you're in good shape. Can’t anyone just post a screenshot… What exactly are we looking for… Anyone can post a screenshot showing that it’s unlocked… Asking because I don’t want to be a victim
But first and foremost, above all other recommendations: use a payment method that allows you recourse. I can't stress this enough. As @Iilac mentioned above, Paypal is terrific for this - but only if you choose the "goods & services" option. It's a few bucks more, but the peace of mind is worth it. Never pay using the "friends & family" option. If you do and things go south, your money is gone. With G&S, opening a dispute is easy, and PP is very buyer-friendly. You might have to wait a few days, but you will get your refund.
