From my track buddy Steve (2019 Corvette):

Here's some footage of the Time Trial Race practice sessions with the Alfa Club:

Time Trial Race Day at Big Willow - YouTube

Roy is driving his 2018 Cadillac ATS-V with his stock tires as his track tires were out of stock. Both Tom and Roy were in the same class.

Tom won first place in his class with his Tuned Civic Type R achieving a 1:34 in the practice sessions, only 2 seconds off of Randy Pobst time:

2020 Honda Civic Type-R | Tire Rack's Hot Laps With Randy Pobst | MotorTrend - YouTube

———————————————————
———————————————————

Can see me for the first 2:17 of the footage, then Steve blows past me. Didn’t know his car could hit 150+ mph on the straight, dayum!!

But he did capture me passing Roy in his Cadillac and Mario in the NSX before surrendering the pole position ?

Even though Steve’s Corvette smoked me on the straight, kept up with him and Mario’s NSX the rest of the way, never falling too far behind ;)

In regards to Randy Pobst, please keep in mind, he did his 1:32 stock on 18” A052s in 105F while I have significant upgrades vs the 2020 he piloted. I’m nowhere near that legend. Would be awesome to see what he could log in my car.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 4BDF6499-DEBD-4D32-A787-9C00E6BDCE9B

For anyone old enough to remember the phrase “When E.F. Hutton speaks.... People listen.....”

That’s how I feel about @Lust when it comes to suggestions to improve our Type Rs for track duty.

Have followed several recommendations and they’ve all been money!
  • PWR race radiator (same as C&R)
  • C&R oil cooler core HKS upgrade
  • RV6 suspension gear (still waiting to install)
  • Vented hood and grill
Throw in a hard lagged Dream Automotive down pipe, turbo oil clamshell heat shield, Acuity hoses and the car seems good cooling wise. Especially after tracking full sessions at Streets of Willow in 103F over summer with the water temp gauge holding steady around 60%.

That said, car is now tuned and maybe not pushed hard enough, being the track n00b that I am. ?

In case extra cooling is needed, nabbed these latest offerings from Dream Automotive after @Lust made me aware they were available:

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 0B7CA4DA-3888-43F8-A76A-C2006D59988D

Hard lagged water pipe and a turbo heat shield. Also picked up a Spoon magnetic drain bolt to cycle between oil changes.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R D0636555-E9CC-4434-AAFF-9347E7647EBA

As mentioned previously the insulation is rated to 1200F and Dream claims it will decrease temps from 1000F down to 200F.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 26B319A9-61F4-43AB-ACA4-9BD8116EFB62

Assumed the turbo heat shield was just going to be cladding, but pleasantly surprised to see it’s the same hard lagging material that’s on their downpipe and water pipe. :headbang:

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R CD5C71B8-6291-4C62-B0C4-2596F5601728
Hope to find time to install before summer hits, am eager to see if it results in water temps lower than 60% under severe ambient conditions.

Looks to be a somewhat involved undertaking... thinking it will require pulling the turbo, inlet tube, downpipe and draining the radiator, among other things, to get the job done. ?

Uploaded raw unedited video of our recent track day 2nd session at Big Willow, which my buddy Steve shared today:

Here

It's superior to the prior video, as it really captures what its like on track and shows what's happening in his rear view. Can see my car hanging tough after getting blown by on the straight heading into turn 1. Definitely my best driving performance to date, heh.:drive:

As mentioned, Steve and the red NSX clocked 133.9's and I got a PB 134.5 during this session. Nice recovery early on by Steve after losing traction on cold tires. Also captures the NSX understeering at speed and going off track briefly at the exit of turn 2, just like I did awhile back. Fortunately didn't miss beat and didn't sustain any damage. Could have easily gone bad. Whew.

Please take a look if track driving is of interest. Preferably full screen and volume up ;)

Have grown to prefer the look of Carbon mirror caps over OEM white, however found double sided tape isn’t strong enough by itself to avoid this edge from lifting... which bothers an OCD supremo like me.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 31FCFFDA-ECF7-415D-8BA9-807752DD10FE

Ordered some of this double sided tape from Michael’s. Couldn’t find it in stock at any of the local stores so got it online. It’s pretty strong and thin. **update** sadly the adhesive is subpar and weak. Don’t buy

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R CDE43BA7-6149-46D0-98B3-309A9706FEA9

Michael’s tape applied in place of the previous 3M tape.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 736449E0-278F-4D13-BA63-24D5A6B01A76

Did a test fit then peeled the backing.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 8F9A25FE-264E-40F0-B7FF-A42212C3B4F4

Figured the new tape still wouldn’t be enough to resolve the corner lift separation issue, so applied some gorilla glue to the problem area.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R E4831971-CC78-4232-BFD4-FD634055BE1D
This much.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 9E0AB7A8-A7B7-439E-9B84-C0C344724B26

Then pressed on the mirror cap and applied pressure to the glued area. Wiped off any excess that extruded past the edge.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 187CDD99-8DF3-4A51-97BE-62083B17BCC4

Wrapped both mirror caps with numerous wraps of painter’s tape to hold them in place while the glue cured.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A1C367ED-7007-4F23-B146-2639A7950286
Carbon Zone Poland mirror caps re-installed to my liking. Opted not to glue the entire thing and stay with tape in case they ever need to be removed or replaced in the future. ;)

My buddy @boosted180sx gave a heads up Dream Automotive shared Eventuri is recalling their carbon fiber turbo inlet tubes, due to some reported stress failures under extreme high HP applications.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F1790156-F6DA-42C1-BEEA-592C23CB4D60
Reached out to Evasive Motorsports. They checked with Eventuri and it looks like a replacement should arrive in 4-6 weeks time. Haven’t experienced any issues other than one of the bolts referenced worked it’s way loose a couple times so reinstalled with Loctite.. so not overly concerned, but will install when the hard lagged water pipe and turbo shield go on.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 2595A1F1-E676-4896-8B2B-D0B461572B0B

Noticed the EZ Carlift developed a slow oil leak on the slave gearbox a few months back. Boytcho Manev provided disassembly instructions to send for warranty repair. Sent both for good measure.

@Topsportsman916 and @bouford are EZ Carlift users I’m aware of, so may only be of interest to them and anyone considering one. :)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F43AB90B-2F70-406C-AD2E-A4208AD82F27

First detached the ramp extensions.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 08F506C9-A82C-4C17-A345-2C9DA67C1C8E

Started with the lift assembled in fully retracted position.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 17DE4DBF-3C21-403F-B96C-A439B33881B7

Then pulled the crossbeams.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 0BA4260E-89B7-4785-A554-58A00A5D81B7

Removed these (4) Allen screws.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 1D04D38B-2439-4462-BF8C-6CD887D23085

Then flipped both ramps upside down.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R D411A5CE-DA36-4ACC-AA94-6EA691E11399

Removed the ramp extension base brackets.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 1EFD6AB8-5E47-4F3B-8899-FF206ADB648F

Otherwise they stop and prevent disassembly.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 05D5999B-9770-495B-89A6-E087BCAFD45C

With all fasteners removed, gently slid the gearbox assembly apart.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 0FB1F518-09DF-4026-93E9-25675D14FAE1

Like this.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 6FB2E938-DF6F-4F67-B7A9-7D10954FE230

Was careful not to damage the white plastic rail guides.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B2FD48E8-66EA-48C6-977E-31F5CDD840F6

Pulled the guides per instructions.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 0DEE47DA-AADF-4D13-B83E-E06EAE7A1419

Then used a 14mm socket, extension and ratchet to remove these bolts on both sides.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R D63F5CBE-A008-4FE9-87B7-261FC82787E6

Had trouble getting this one out...and here’s why.. it’s bent. Enough so the brass bushing can t come off and was deformed a little. ? Boytcho will provide bushing replacements as needed. Just (1) so far...

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 258EBA64-76D4-47A8-94CA-C0E773C487F2

Removed these bolts also.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 40010EF1-AA6A-4B2C-94DE-3903CB9015D8

Like this.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A6BE9D7E-EBDD-49A1-B014-887B92EF4AD4

Found they were also bent. Just not as bad.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 7889C29B-3AD0-4A98-B1AB-9F831E9341ED

Noted the number of threads showing on the aluminum safety nut and threaded bushing... so can put back to the same spot when time to reassemble.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C638CCEE-A475-4D9C-A065-B17ACE5AC428

Then unthreaded and set them aside.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 592ED55B-62BC-486B-8E07-E3E97518F0D9

Forgot to take a pic if the gearbox assembly removed. But this is what it looked like. Packed and shipped the gearboxes to Boytcho. God speed my preciousssesss!!

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B3C891A6-9453-4D58-A209-325AC1031BB2

Nearly every bolt removed was bent. Will replace with stronger grade B7s.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 030C38CD-750E-47EF-A986-C6A6D583A867

Asked Boytcho why this occurred and he said the manual calls for a minimum clearance of 1” before any engagement occurs. Otherwise the EZ Carlift operates at a leverage disadvantage when forces are strongest to overcome. The bent bolts are a result.

Of course, I didn’t read that part and have repeatedly operated the lift @stock height, as shown above and the clearance was insufficient.

Solution: after replacing all bolts with stronger B7s, drive the car onto 1” x 6” pieces of wood, then slide the EZ Carlift under so it can do its job with the proper 1” minimum clearance and leverage, when using.

Attended a SoCal Type R foodie meet organized by Miguel GT of the SoCal FB group. All you can eat Shabu Shabu. Met one of the fastest Type R drivers Clement Kwong :drive:

Stopped for gas and the battery suddenly died. This is the 2nd time it’s happened in just over 2 years 3 months of ownership.

No more crappy OEM Honda battery for me. Going to try AAA w/3 year warranty and see if it fares any better.

Heh at first read, I thought the suggestion was to trade in the Type R for a Honda Odyssey

If ever follow through with goal of adding a Radium fuel surge tank, will be exploring a smaller profile battery to accommodate. Does Antigravity or Odyssey offer something like that?

I think some guys are using the Odyssey PC680 which is a ~13lb battery. Roughly 7x3x6

Had a long, frustrating day at work. We’ve been hard at it since January, maintaining and fixing stuff in the power plant and a key deadline is approaching this Monday...

Stopped by the control room on my way out and made the mistake of shutting the car door with the engine idling...

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F90DBEA0-CA62-49E8-A753-F06C3C16126C

Tried to open the door and it was locked?
Da fuq? Peered through the window and saw the message: keyless remote not detected.

Dunno if it’s a Motec glitch, but had the key fob in my pocket and the door and hatch locks were not responding. Tried pushing the buttons on the door handles and key fob and no dice. :banghead:

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 22FAE132-A9BA-4BAC-AE7F-4AF05A0900AB

Was starting to look like I might have to let the car run until it ran outta gas...are you kidding me? Just wanted to get home :dunno:

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 2224017F-AF1E-43AB-A378-FB34FB34F08D

As panic and depair started creeping in, a smart person came along to see what the commotion was about...asked for the key fob, flipped it over and showed me this switch...

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 984DA487-DC34-4C82-ABF8-C43749B30A27

Pressed it and out popped this...

Handy dandy physical ?

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A2211885-87A9-4BA8-84B7-3D675099E254

What a relief ? Smh...this is our first newer car and was clueless about the built in key fob failsafe.

Thank goodness this occurred where someone with a clue was there to help.

@fatherpain I love how candid you are. Good, bad, and the funny come out in your thread which I appreciate the hell out of.

I had a similar moment in my wife’s new Silverado sitting at a red light. I was on the phone, looked down and saw zero oil pressure. Hung up the phone quick and put the truck in park. That’s when I realized it was utilizing the auto shut-off feature ???‍♂
