Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 33B56CCA-DFAF-4836-A696-15E4B1E32B14
Here a step by step steering wheel swap and the tools needed:
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Flat screwdriver (small)
  • Pick tool
  • Phillips screwdriver + Torx T30 bit
  • 10mm socket and ratchet
  • 10mm allen socket
  • Breaker bar
  • 1/2” to 3/8” socket adapter
  • Impact gun
  • Loctite threadlocker blue
This install video was really helpful:

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 30257AEC-1A29-471A-8BE1-91AE3D34A64B

First center the steering wheel.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R D1FE170B-DA0D-4ADA-A501-F928A07848E4

Disconnect the battery using the 10mm socket and ratchet. Negative terminal first then positive. This disables the airbag. Reconnnect positive then negative, after the air bag is removed. This is so steering can be repositioned if it locks in a position you don’t want.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 9CC13CE0-5E1C-4516-A86B-2DA8D5CBC54B

Remove the torx screws securing the airbag from both sides of the steering column. Passenger side...

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 5F24A14B-F36B-4983-A126-A186154DB8E7

And driver’s side. When the time comes to reinstall, suggest doing both from this side. Can rotate the wheel to bring the passenger side to this position. So much easier.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 7F6FDB3A-BD57-475E-BE20-404B93193507
Gently lift the airbag. There are wires to disconnect behind before it can be fully removed.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 278CA401-55D9-4E75-A867-FE6BE2458514

These connections are (1) horn, (2-3) airbag

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C7952F3E-4723-428F-B4C5-126E040D29D5

A better view.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 69699093-79E4-4187-9ADD-55646697DCB4

First, disconnect the horn. Use a pick to press this tab while gently pulling the wire.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 4FCE771D-0D36-4494-B95D-1D93A9A2378C

And off it comes.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R E1C6ABF9-D62C-46BB-B778-DED02CB32520

Closeup view of the tab to be pressed to release the horn connector.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 0968CEBC-224C-4869-8402-4587D876EFDF

Now there is play to flip the airbag for better access to the connectors. One is gray, the other green. The corresponding female plugs are the same color, so no need to remember which is which ;). These are released by lifting the 2 white tabs on the sides.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 4096C594-FAE7-4FEE-8477-006378759E08

Was able to remove one with my fingers, but was unable to do the second this way...

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 127DAA47-A679-4B4D-ACE6-FAF03BFCAD79

Much easier to use a small screwdriver and pick to lift these tabs and off it comes.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 9789AC92-80CD-46DA-82DE-2E498600EE9F
Set airbag aside in a safe place. :)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 5AE23DEB-8E99-4C97-A7CB-F413625F2BB9

With the airbag out of the way, can see the white wiring connector that needs to be disconnected, the horn wire clip and steering column retaining bolt. Note the blue match marks.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 0240995E-57E8-41DA-92EC-4401259E7D90

Use a pick to pry this plastic clip to free the horn wire.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 4066E30C-CFA4-48FF-8547-AA4B5E421323

Like this.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 2CEBB8F4-C693-4EF7-B338-A94C77F4EEBB

Then depress this tab.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F419528E-27F6-4651-AD9A-A0888FB65EC7

And pull the connector. This feeds the steering controls.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 9FBBD43E-8F97-433D-A909-FF4FC0211637

The bolt securing the steering wheel to the column requires a 10mm allen socket.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 7E4BFA2C-A94A-417D-B6C5-E3C8D3D1B4F1

Loosen the retaining bolt using the breaker bar. The steering locks in place or can have a 2nd person hold the wheel to prevent from turning. An impact gun would work if it’s strong enough.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 8832696D-D6CE-4E97-94BD-2D637C66A645

Once broken free, remove the column bolt. This Milwaukee M12 impact gun wasn’t strong enough, which is why I used the breaker bar. In hindsight, may have just needed to be fully charged as it’s been sitting for months.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R EEAE0CDE-CED3-43F0-A23B-96539C373C40

Had enough juice to back out the column bolt.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 6DE19313-C7F6-4D95-9127-50D55753E749

Blip the starter and re-straighten the wheel before pulling off. This is why the battery needs be be connected after the air bag is removed.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 821D65C7-781A-4D7B-A535-4571928C8F4E

Fish the airbag wires through while removing the steering wheel.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 8509B9CB-C3D3-43F1-A5AA-1931668646EC
Steering column with wheel removed. Be careful to keep this orientation with the white plastic guide pin on the left, barcode on right. This spins easily.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F289809B-C023-4656-B176-55AA1E7AE0C4

The next step is to transfer parts to the Carbon Zone Poland steering wheel.

Please excuse the gaudy blanket. Needed something soft to set the wheels on and this was the first thing I could find. ?

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C8ABC18C-8B0E-436E-BE3E-137B7D3691BD

Remove these (5) screws and undo the ground wire.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R FB30BEF5-1371-4764-B123-212AEC869B98

Like so...

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 28681E30-34F2-4C23-B0D5-0CD0E2A5E3DA
To remove the back plastic shroud and horn wiring, press these (2) black tabs away from the core.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R DC8D6120-CFC9-4012-B018-F4D6BCE52111

And pry these (2) gray brackets off from the black tabs, then gently press down on the shroud.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 39D58FFA-3BF1-4C9D-B945-11CED1988A5B

After the shroud loosens, flip the OEM wheel over and contiune to wiggle and pull.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A9DD624F-6C24-4D63-9BFC-2AED9A843A8D

Separate these black posts from where they engage.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 29A4B664-9CA8-4EDC-8BFF-2E2FC1E6E8D1

Before the shroud can come off, this blue connector needs to be released.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BCE7E271-1EA0-473E-AAB3-A2054000156A

Press this tab using a pick to release.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R DBAC5B47-7F97-4E41-AF24-E1C24808D8E7

And pull.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R FADAFD44-C10E-43A7-BED3-47CFAC6C438C

Repeat for the white connector on the opposite side.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 4349DB90-2976-4489-8EED-9336CC620624
Voila, rear shroud removed :)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 9C91DD1E-126D-4E34-B4F5-EA2033314320

Now it’s time to remove the plastic trim and controls. Keep the steering wheel face down (on a soft non marring surface).

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 034FA171-11C6-4B99-AC9A-217F78237DA5

Use a Phillips screwdriver or punch to press on the plastic post through this hole.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 30A0C0DB-C8F8-409E-9899-54B45D2CA21C

And the bottom plastic trim pops off. The mechanic in the video explained this is the preferred method rather than prying and leaving marks. Brilliant! :headbang:

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C4AB63A3-31E8-4B63-ABCE-0683E915123E

For the controls, there are (2) posts to press out on each side of the wheel. The post with an arrow requires pushing to the side first to release the clip, then down.

The control panel is a single piece and very fragile. Work the posts a little at a time, on each side, so it comes out evenly and doesn’t crack.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 68B60B71-EDFF-47D5-82CE-8A3E67DB4905

A medium sized flat screwdriver works well for this. Press this tab to the side then down.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 6BFF5719-EA99-443D-A4F0-B26A34691F00

Then just press the other post. Alternate back and forth. Do this for both sides, a little at a time.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 8ACBB2B3-AB96-45D3-B17D-20696FE0234D

When the tab is released and it begins to move, can press harder.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 6C5D05CF-987E-48D6-851A-7A480AA5FFB5

It’s a good idea to periodically check to make sure the panel is coming off evenly.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 3E979858-2C49-480E-A3ED-808842CEC204
OEM steering core completely stripped. Control panel fully intact. ?

Line up the control piece posts, then press on.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 08EBA1B0-699F-49FC-941E-C090A2F4C981

Verify proper engagement of this guide pin to the lower plastic trim pieceThere is another on the opposite side.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B0CE97A8-1462-4FFD-B88D-25F7670F8E21

Press on the lower trim and make sure it’s fully seated.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 56C13A17-EB1E-4C24-8A77-2578533C09EC

Reconnect the blue and white connectors.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 16ADE198-5CFE-4CED-AFCA-75E451DFE6A0

OEM bits successfully transferred to the Carbon Zone Poland Steering wheel. :)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 144B5F0B-3D5C-4737-9212-C26C1CEB76C9

With the steering wheel ready to go back on, make sure the steering column is lined up and straight.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C3CF7130-85DA-454F-AB4A-9533724341E6

Gently press the wheel back on to the spline and make sure the white guide pin on the left arrow lines up. Verify the wheel is pointed straight, same as when taken off. Fish the air bag connectors and wiring back through. Plug in the white connector and install the horn wire to the plastic clip.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R D945E261-83A6-4D5F-B885-F482160506F4

Ready some blue Loctite threadlocker.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 18CF1366-B04C-4619-83F6-5D510FFA017E

And apply a nice amount to the steering column bolt threads. No sense risking the wheel coming off while driving. ;)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 28A339B2-E7FC-4AB1-AD73-EF895063BCF1

Once threads are properly engaged, can use an impact gun or ratchet to tighten.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 39D2C6A5-A697-4565-92BD-EAB95822CF4F

Then apply final torque using the breaker bar. Torque specs = Guten Tight ? Verify original blue match marks line up.

Reinstalling the airbag is the last step. Gotta disconnect the battery again for this to be safe.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R D07D4EE1-8F6B-441C-9689-F40155E33FE8

Position the airbag then snap the connectors on.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BD0754C6-A092-4C36-B1F4-B230A2F05BC8

Close the gap so the horn wiring connector will reach.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 88969F02-C66C-42FC-9F30-5365B1729702

Don’t think it matters, but oriented the spade connector exactly as found. OCD is OCD ?

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 78ABF5E1-C632-4832-BCD1-10DB8409C58F

Gave the airbag retention bolts some Loctite also, just in case.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BB35E31E-DE3D-4055-A991-D48E5580915E

As previously mentioned, it’s easiest to install both airbag bolts from the driver’s side. Reconnect the battery to pulse the ignition, so the steering wheel can rotate. Smarter not harder baby!

Carbon Zone Poland CF/Alcantara steering wheel installed. ?

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 97EAFF54-ADDF-4E12-884F-4C4BACC9088F

This completes my run on Carbon Zone Poland products, until Jacek Wisniewski comes up with something new. Will keep on the lookout as am a big fan of his workmanship.

Now are you sure Jacek actually makes them? From what I heard from one of his competitors is that they get their stuff from the same suppliers/makers. I'm not knocking his work. Just saying what I heard. Either way they are good quality.

It doesn't matter where they buy the materials, all that matters is the quality of the final product, which in this case is excellent. In addition, as long as Carbon Zone Poland has products that you no longer find in other manufacturers, in terms of elements, design and materials, it can be concluded that they produce their own parts.

Heh, thank you Arch. But you give too much credit. ?

If I can do these mods, anyone can. Before the OCD kicked in, all I ever did was an occasional oil change. A mechanical background is helpful, but not necessary....though having the right tools for the job is key.

Hopefully these ramblings compliment other valuable info shared by our fellow forum members and YouTube videos to help show the way....in case anyone wants to give it a try. ;)

Hmm.. Not sure Dave, never gave it much thought... There’s always some lead time involved, so I assume he’s making them, heh.

But I’ve been happy with products I’ve purchased from CZP so far. The steering wheel was the last of Jacek’s offerings I didn’t have.

He reached out just before Xmas to lmk he had a US steering wheel core in hand to build around, so I jumped on it.

US Buyers normally need to ship him their existing wheel, disabling the car for (2) months or so, I’m guessing.

Now that I’m done with CF interior trim upgrades, am starting to think about Suedit’s Alcantara upgrades...But @boosted180sx warns that is also a deep rabbit hole. Jin offers too much good stuff ? and costs can quickly add up like going all out on Carbon Zone Poland.

Yeah I went all out with carbon my ride stuff and you are absolutely right things added up super quick. I too wouldn't mind going with the stuff that @boosted180sx has as far as alcantara goes. But I could easily see another couple grand easily. Sending you a message now but I found a manufacturer soon to carry carbon fiber antenna covers. ?

Heh, that would be an honor Kefi if this somehow got stickied to a higher traffic area of CivicX, like the general forum, so new comers could see. I’d wager 50% or more of our members are unaware the build section exists. ?

My buddy @boosted180sx has been a big influence with knowledge drops that have helped this build. @turbociv910 has been critical helping me upgrade to Motec and I’m watching his thread in case I ever decide to go further than FBO. Just sharing what I’m learning along the way to hopefully help our CTR community.

Just need to find some way to catch the attention of an admin ?

this thread damn near needs to be stickied for knowledge tell ya hwat

Here is how the J’s Racing front center badge holder with a STEK carbon fiber PPF backing turned out.

It’s a subtle difference, but am pleased with the outcome.

The STEK background provides a little bit of contrast for the black chrome H emblem, as opposed to solid black.

California Legacy mounted to the Raceseng license plate adapter, in place of the tow hook. ?

One of the guys at work commented: “Kinda OCD, Tom? How about very OCD?”
