Pulling the bumper for the umpteenth time, realized I’ve yet to post a step by step. Been meaning to do so.... Here goes nothing, while I’m waiting for parts and there’s a lull in the action.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 6ECF77C3-FE09-45F2-A73B-8E1617632E55

First, with the car safely raised and the hood open, remove this rubber seal. There are several plastic push pins and clips to pull, then it comes right off. It’s common for pins to break or need replacement, so it’s a good idea to have extras on hand. Especially the ones found underneath the car.

Note: in this photo, the hard plastic shroud that covers the radiator is removed. This is not necessary to just pull the bumper.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 0079A0E9-FB3B-41DE-B63E-E8D8F7FBEE86

Rubber seal removed. Be careful, because the clips are small, easily fall out and can be lost. It’s a good idea to keep all the clips together in one place.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 080B58E8-063A-4158-9B82-D4AD3BFE7A06

Underneath, these plastic push clips need to come off.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R E4AC1B02-80D6-4938-97D8-AB87F02882AF

More push clips in the center. The ones at the front lip do not need to come off.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R AC0D359B-954F-4BFA-8477-5505154F5932

A flat head screwdriver works well to pop the push clips open so they come out. Be sure to wear eye protection in case pebbles or sand fall down. It’s amazing how many push pins are scraped to smithereens and need replacing. I probably replace a dozen or so every (6) months and I’m still at stock height.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 08820323-29A9-42E4-8619-61E7A1489706

Remove this 5mm Allen head and push clip. There is another on the other side.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 37DDFE8A-4A52-4CBD-83E8-2B673013C3A1

Remove this 10mm bolt head at each end. (2) total.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 62200B64-985B-4FB4-9459-70A04157C388

There are (2) recessed 10mm bolt heads that also need to come out.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R EB3F30A2-A1CD-4005-86C1-54C1BCB72394

An extension or deep socket works well.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 15DA0751-E8BF-43EB-87EF-8FC8B4369BE1

Remove these (3) Phillips head screws. Repeat for the other side.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 419EEB15-D87F-4645-AE28-9D0C13ABC5C7

Separate each corner. There are tabs that hold it so be careful not to break them when tugging at it. Leave each corner like this.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 4B140AE8-15CA-4F3A-8B4B-FADAF3601A55

Use a small flat screwdriver or pick to release the (2) bumper tabs under the headlights. Be careful not to mar the bumper.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 41C56CBF-05A3-4168-8204-D024B093B0A2

Then carefully pry away from the headlights.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 5D77B748-5206-4438-84E8-BC703CCA71F8

The black eyebrows also have (2) tabs to release in the same manner.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 0FC7B91A-8BED-41B4-B198-925385755D54

Position (2) cushioned stools (or anything suitable) under each end of the bumper to set it on when it’s ready to come off. A good trick is to keep 1 or 2 plastic push clips installed at the top, to prevent the bumper from falling off before you’re ready.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 47C60D6F-73F2-437B-8AD4-73E1285FE0E7

Carefully pull and place it on the stools. The fog lights need to be disconnected before the bumper can fully come off.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R E9298152-8794-4E66-9F4F-BFAECE37AC16

Disconnect each fog by pulling this plug.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R AAABA978-D629-4513-ADCE-8A77545FC4F8

Bumper fully removed and set aside. The black eyebrows are just snapped in place and can fall off so don’t lift from there. Grab it at the ends of the grill or anywhere substantial.

To reinstall, simply reverse these steps and be gentle with the bumper when lining everything back up. Don’t force anything ;)

Note: Boosted180sx lmk bumper removal can also be done by removing the push clips towards the front lip underneath the car, instead of the ones further back like I’ve demonstrated, which also removes part of the under tray. This would eliminate the need to pull the 10mm bolts and Allen heads ;)

MiguelGT on the SoCal Type R FB pages called for a pop-up meet to support a couple local businesses with take out orders. Face masks and 6’ social distancing Mandatory. Ron Batalla removed his silencers from his Tomei exhaust and it was loud as hell. ? He is working on a big HP build so am curious how it turns out.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A998C1B0-4A02-4BD5-84A8-AF20F7187B5F

Was nice to talk mods and tracking with the fellas. Good turnout, would estimate 20 Type R’s showed up. Made sure I kept a safe distance.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 12FFB9FF-5533-46EA-AF25-AEA8BF83B2E7

Car was washed the night before so was looking glossy and presentable on the outside. The inside is a different story. Gonna spend some time cleaning It out tomorrow in preparation for Streets of Willow 5/17/20 with Speed District. Taking my oldest son again. Hopefully I don’t go off track this time around

Forgot to ask you about the DEI wrap you used for the oil cooler...what size did you go with?

The DEI wraps came with the HKS oil cooler when I picked it from Mario_Kart. Thought it was packing material and almost tossed it, until looking closer.

The DEI wraps are sleeved over the supplied HKS insulation, which is thin and seems barely adequate alone. Highly recommend extra insulation.

Unfortunately, the wraps do not have markings so don’t know the size.

Whelp, survived a 3rd track day, this time at Streets of Willow (Clockwise) Sunday 5/17/20.

Unfortunately I clipped this corner circled in red at about 30MPH and likely bent my passenger side rim. Otherwise had a lot of fun in the beginner group. This screen cap is from my buddies car, who filmed some of the action below.

Had (2) buddies with me at the track. One driving a 500HP Cadillac CTR and my friend in a 450HP BMW 335i.

In this video, they start by following me, and I’m behind The black Porsche GT3.

The Porsche driver wouldn’t give the point by when I was on his tail, so I didn’t attempt to pass.... That in turn caused the others to start riding my back prematurely

I give the point by and lift off the accelerator, so they can pass safely, per the rules.

The Porsche continues to impede the other driver’s and draws a blue flag (people trying to pass)

After my friends pass the black Porsche, he held me up and wouldn’t give the point by again.

Not wanting to incur a black flag or do anything unsafe, I remained behind him for about another lap or 2 Before he finally gave up and pointed me by. By that time my buddies were long gone ?

Really enjoyed Streets of Willow. As you can see from the video, there are lots of turns and it’s lower speed. The Type R seems made for this type of track, where big HP isn’t as big an advantage like at Big Willow.

No cooling issues to report. Though being a beginner am probably not close to pushing the limits and am still untuned. Ambient temperature reached a high of 81 F.

Overtaking a Miata...

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 52ECAFEA-2C9B-4CE8-A8DA-5378C3C9A150

Really enjoy the quality photos included with the Speed District package. Surprised how quickly they uploaded.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 449C09F9-AF2C-41DA-8E06-1768F9842CA5

Streets of Willow is a much slower track than Big Willow....There is are just (2) areas of the track where you can hit 100+

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 1D1BC92D-FCEB-44B2-81DA-2460D5F6303D

Otherwise it’s a lot of turns. But so much fun.

Speed District is a little pricier than other track groups, but there are less cars so more track time and cool photos are included.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 7DCD125D-0AE1-4FC2-A213-6D3A4685F902

The Miata did not catch me ;)

Max speed was about 105 mph but most driving was in the 30-70 mph range

Cool shots, looks like a great time. Sorry to hear about your wheel though.

Btw, how's your 400mm Broadway mirror doing with the magnets to cut down on vibration? I'm still eyeing a 360mm flat so that it doesn't run too close to the sun visors.

Thank you ApexEight. The magnets are working well so far. Have (3) domino sized magnets, but will probably add a 4th. Double sided tape works well to secure them. No issues coming loose at the track.

On a side note, despite having no overheating issues with Koyorad so far, ordered a PWR premium race radiator....Might be overkill for my skill level, but the race version is what PWR recommended for Street/Track users.

Made it out to Buttonwillow Raceway Friday 5/22/20. It’s all the way up next to Bakersfield, a 2.5 hour drive north from OC.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 806AFAD3-86D3-4D68-90CE-B36D4DE166C4

My older boy had final exams, so brought my youngest son, Chance. He was scared at first and didn’t want to accompany me on track. I “encouraged” him to do a couple introductory easy warm up laps. He had fun and rode with me the entire day :)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 8D6D86AA-44C4-4CB4-B1BD-98CC8CD1696A

There were several S2K’s but I had the only Type R at the track. Lots of Porsches and Vettes. Had the new set of RE71Rs Installed so was ready to rock. With new tires all the vibration I’d been experiencing went away, so thinking the TE37SLs aren’t in bad shape after all :)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 09BD9AAB-7C9A-453B-8E8F-D15D184FE8E6

Gotta love distance learning. Chance was able to log onto class through the Buttonwillow gift shop WiFi connection. I ain’t a dad that encourages playing hooky ;)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 66585173-40E3-4201-A65E-96D8979E9851

Didn’t aggressively drive the course until the final session when my advanced buddy rode shotgun and coached me to stay longer on the accelerator, go later and harder and trust the brakes and turn at the proper apex. Will be faster next time I’m able to return to Buttonwillow.

Buttonwillow was a blast. Would describe it as a combination of some of the speed of Bigwillow and turns of Streets of Willow, with a couple small elevations added, but on a better track surface. I managed to stay on the course the entire time but a lot of guys went off. Counted lots of dust clouds and yellow flags.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R CC64A23C-69E1-4AEA-8A8F-89F7A72D05D8

Here was the Speed District track schedule. Could have driven (9) sessions in Beginner/Open Track yesterday....However, my buddy’s car crapped out so took him to Bakersfield to get some parts. As a result I did (7), which was still plenty.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F931600D-4174-4F8E-9F60-AC4273FF56FF

Opened the hood between sessions to let the engine cool and noticed the Superstik allowed oil to blow past its O-ring. Disappointing but not unexpected ?‍♂

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 82021E36-7437-41E7-97B9-8AEBF58D9CEE

Removed the engine cover and found a light amount of oil everywhere. Sopped it up, then continued to drive. Will swap back to the OEM dipstick for the future as the Superstik is a fail and will go back to being a level verification tool for oil changes. Emailed Superstik to let them know their dipstick doesn’t fully seat and is a faulty design. Hoping they somehow sent the wrong one.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C12FB962-1B29-4B87-9B1D-C75A681C4215

Maintained the trend of damaging my car each time it’s taken to the track ... didn’t go off this time,, but kissed the front lip on a tall curb while parking in Bakersfield, Will dress it and it should be ok. Thankfully it’s the stock splitter.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B2467733-1BBD-408C-B2E6-D5562F699D8F

Some of our middle aged and older members might appreciate this blast from the past... Stopped at Pioneer Chicken in Bell Gardens on the way home. Back in the day, Pioneer Chicken was KFC’s main rival for fried chicken supremacy but lost.... Discovered there are still (2) locations in existence, Bell Gardens and East LA. Super delicious after all these years. Food’s the same, decor is the same....Wouldn’t be surprised if the cooks are the same, heh... Just like stepping into a time machine when you go inside. Cash only! No debit or credit cards accepted if you go!

All in all, another fun track day!

Have always preferred the black legacy California plate over the standard white and it will match what I’ve have going with the color scheme of my car better...

Ordered this personalized plate. Hopefully it goes through and doesn’t get me pulled over by the PoPo for a State Ref when it’s on, ?

Kinda surprised it was available in California...Maybe that’s a warning flag haha

Finally got around to installing the Rays center caps and adapters. To do so, had to remove the hub centric rings. The adapters press onto the wheels then the caps press into the adapters.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 965BF0D6-8CAE-46EA-BADA-6B7F21F702EA

Center caps aren’t permitted at the track, so can only use these for daily driving. Had I known that going in, probably would not have gotten them.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 01DE3FF4-0D63-486B-A47C-B15561A7E33B

Have a few mods to install so likely won’t hit the track again until July or August, so will leave these on until then.

More track photos courtesy of Speed District. This time at Buttonwillow Raceway 5/22/20

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A722638A-36DF-4A97-8007-774DA9B670C3

Missed a couple of the midday sessions to take my buddy to Bakersfield for a new radiator hose.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 61936B5E-3217-416B-B390-429B03D56F69

Most of the photos are solo shots this time, because I wasn’t going fast enough to stay close to the other drivers. In hindsight, I should have asked my advanced friend to ride along and coach me the first session.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 9072D371-7C25-4826-97E3-E0F6A518F2BE

I couldn’t ride with him, because his Subaru has been completely stripped and there is only (1) seat. It’s a full race car now.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R E2F525A7-31E5-4E58-A111-458431062929

Receiving instruction or doing a ride along with a driver that knows the course is such a huge help (for me at least). The session my buddy went with me was a game changer, especially being a track n00b.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 5B2E2D78-E587-4264-AB7F-99F744F1BE23

Despite not aggressively driving Buttonwillow until the end of the day, it was still a fun outing. My younger son overcame his initial fear of the track and rode with me the entire time, he enjoyed it and we didn’t crash. That’s really all the dad in me could ask for.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R E9A18F1E-8798-44D5-8FDE-5DA81EA3EC0C

Saw increased temperatures on the final session @4pm, when the car was pushed harder under my buddy’s guidance. By that time ambient was showing 89F. Saw the temperature gauge rise to 65% about 8 laps in with the heater running, so did a cool down lap and ended the day on a high note. Didn’t want to experience going limp.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R FA1F5E4F-6999-4687-A761-FD7AAAC8800B

Current cooling mods are:

Koyorad radiator
HKS oil cooler w/DEI wrapped lines
J’s Racing grill w/center emblem
Wagner Tuning Intercooler w/silicone hoses

This setup has performed well for the (4) track days I’ve had, but can see more will be needed with summer approaching, my ability to push the car improving and a tune somewhere down the road.

With that in mind, planning the following changes, hopefully in time for the SoCal summer:

J’s Racing vented hood
PWR Premium Race Radiator replacing Koyorad
Acuity reverse flow silicone radiator hoses
Dream Automotive high flow catted DP w/lagging
Dream Automotive turbo oil return heat shield
Remove J’s grill emblem holder for 20% more air.
Thermostat w/lower temp setting *maybe*

Car is still a daily driver so not interested in doing an AC delete at this time.

Checked with Yasu @J’s Racing USA and my J’s vented hood arrived in his shipment. Cruised over ditched the box and the hood fit in the hatch perfectly with the seats folded down.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 1EC4C34D-F3FD-4225-8B00-B227DC01DD69

Yasu also received some J’s valve covers In his shipment. Had been eyeing this for several months, so grabbed one.

In addition to oil leaks due to the Superstik, found the engine cover also was leaking. Will take to my nephew for warranty seal replacement and install the J’s cover.

Tom, another great write up!! I've got a few mods to do but the weekends have been so nice, I've just wanted to drive the R. The Radium CCV catch can and expansion tank are sitting on the shop table. Also have Magic collars to install. I've got to tighten up!! Lol!! Glad to see you and your family are doing well during all of this mess.
