Enlisted my nephew, the Honda Tech, to help pull the OEM grill from the bumper a couple weeks back in preparation for the J’s Racing grill install. Could have done it myself, but he is so much faster at it then I am.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F4108E5E-181B-430C-A144-E651A120BC3F

About (6) bolts had to come off.

With the OEM grill removed from the bumper, started to install the J’s Racing Grill.
The center vertical support needed to be cut .

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 88A479DE-DD8A-4095-A632-71D9D2DEBBF9

Suffered through a couple weeks of rain, procrastination and confusion over the J’s Racing subpar installation instructions... Finally pulled a Nike and just did it.

Huge thank you to metal_driver :bow:for his informative install posts on the J’s Racing Grill thread... that, combined with the J’s instructions and some tinkering around, got it done :)

Brought the bumper and grill inside to get a good look at it and have room to work.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F9FCFAF0-A880-49E2-8536-83183415C96A

If using the optional center emblem holder, cut the foam that comes with the kit in half.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R FA92831C-10D3-4DD5-8DEB-B91DB0055B70

and stick on the top and bottom of the emblem holder like this.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R EDD4BD73-9E09-40DB-B2ED-BA86CFC1C6F8

The emblem holder then attaches to the center metal bracket. Turns out this bracket is not visible If the holder is attached.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 27B7E1B6-691A-473D-83FE-3AAE3230D01E

As metal_driver stated, this thin adhesive foam is placed inside the upper groove...
Measure and cut it into lengths to fit between the slots that are open

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C6A981B7-47B4-45EE-ADB3-F1FC10A85788

Like this. Foam cut and inserted into the upper groove with slots exposed.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 0E0EEF1E-2749-480B-B70B-FD808AA8A8F2

As metal_driver stated there are (9) of these metal clips with threaded holes to slip onto the tabs of the J’s grill.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 5ADEB1B4-911C-4D52-AAA9-62C63A6D2D93

Like this. The top (3) tabs do not have corresponding holes on the OEM bumper so these holes have to be drilled... the trick is how do you mark the holes? Had to think on this for awhile and read J’s instructions over and over until I finally understood how.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R AC5FC1A8-F9D7-47C8-BDE1-08435DC1C9A8

First, cut (3) small paper squares and use the included bolts to punch holes in them.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 68EEB71D-0867-4678-946E-9360C2FD3A63

Next put some scotch tape on both sides of the squares.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 49E84F71-284D-4109-99E5-A96C0E873A7F

Fasten the (3) squares to the (3) upper tabs of the J’s Grill using the scotch tape.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BB8382D3-0A2E-4A11-A528-4ED983665592

Like this.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 9EC3294E-3A31-4A77-8698-9F7EE59D3501

Now get some double sided tape and do the same thing. Make (3) squares and punch holes using the supplied bolts.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A86A106D-D527-440B-BC2F-FC8C7DEB5BF8

Peel the backing off one of the sides of the double stick tape, line up the holes and lightly apply to the paper squares, so it’s barely hanging on and doesn’t stick too hard.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C0C817EA-64EE-42C9-B726-E8D386F6CE3E

Carefully remove the remaining backing, leaving a sticky tape ready to grab onto the tabs on the Bumper and let go of the paper squares on the J’s grill.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C2623B44-D912-42B5-A2BE-8CBB5837DEF4

Double sided tape exposed and ready to grab onto the bumper tabs..

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 70FBA259-641E-4034-BAA7-D962E3FD6678

Now line up the (4) upper tabs and insert the grill into the bumper. Press hard at the (3) tabs where the holes need to be marked, then remove the grill.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A69A9190-8A26-45A9-9FD6-65AA6A788B47

Woohoo! Success!!! Double sided tape successfully transferred to the bumper marking the locations all (3) holes to drill.

Double sided tape marking where to drill.
First used a small drill bit to make a pilot hole, then used a drill bit that matched the existing OEM holes to finish it off.

Fit the grill and screwed in the (9) bolts. As metal_driver shared, the longest bolt goes into the center upper tab that threads into the cut center plastic

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BE2BAB53-733B-4E9B-936B-E6ADCE4B3EC9

The (2) ends of the grill need to be drilled using a tiny drill bit. Compared the bit to the included self tapping screws and did it a little smaller so the screws would bite.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 2409CAAC-5ACA-4D5B-9EC9-4E08CBFB6BB5

Measured carefully and drilled

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 400D9408-3346-4234-B906-9994C2B5595C

screwed the self tapping screw to fasten the end of the grill to the bumper. Repeated for the other side.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F17DF47C-0138-47E6-AC98-31E9405C8EC3

Pulled the grill off the bumper several times to adjust the grill mesh.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 3DDBACB4-34F0-4F20-B17A-1759EC3A6FB9

Finally settled on sandwiching the mesh between the grill and the emblem holder strap. The strap will provide extra stability and support. Bent the (2) ends of the mesh to the contour of the grill so it would fit into the bumper better..

Reinstall this plastic rectangular backing.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 255DA757-8433-4E18-B763-A3491CC5E68E

It’s held in place by (2) plastic push clips

And (2) screws.

The bottom of the emblem holder strap and grill tab hit the crash beam and scraped the black spray paint when the grill and bumper were installed to the car, so used a grinder to remove about 1/8” of the metal to provide clearance

This is how much was trimmed. Might take off some more in the future if find it’s still rubbing.

Fitment at right.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R AFBB6F81-3E60-4E28-8538-FE91BAC34B33

Doh.. look how bad the fitment is!
Was anticipating some fitment issues and thought it would be due to bowing or warping... the majority of the issues appear to be due to poorly finished edges. They are all over the place. Fortunately there weren’t any issues installing the grill. These are strictly cosmetic :(

The good news is it appears the fitment will be an easy fix. Took it to the body shop and all that is involved is marking the proper gap with painters tape, then using some 80 and 220 grit sandpaper to finish the line where I want it... Will take back apart to do the work myself to save on labor costs. When it’s ready will take just the grill to paint. The estimate for paint and clear coat is $180.

Will mark a line to this gap spacing using painters tape then sand it all until the fitment is uniform

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R DB208490-FAA2-43C3-988F-EC0B8321A26F

Like this. Thin painter’s tape would have been easier to contour, but a regular roll worked fine.

J’s Racing grill and OLM/Morimoto headlights installed.

Despite my gripes about fitment, anticipated it likely would be an issue going in...Just didnt know it was this bad, heh. That said, really digging the more aggressive look and the black AC condenser and crash beam minimizes the Manta Ray/Whale Shark similarities of the grill ;)

Will mark the proper gap with painter’s tape, pull the bumper again remove the grill, sand it down to fix the fitment then it’s off for paint and a clear coat for $180.

Reinstall then it will need PFF and ceramic coat, then it will be done!

Still waiting for a new JDM Honda Badge and J’s Vented hood to complete the front end overhaul. It’s worth noting the center emblem base reduces yair flow by 20%.

Switched from the 300mm flat to the 400mm convex Broadway mirror.

Blind spots on both sides are completely eliminated and vibration is reduced, presumably due to the additional weight.

The convex takes a little getting used to, because objects appear smaller in the distance, which makes it abit more difficult to determine if there is a cop present... heh.

The benefit is being able to see everything as opposed to the tiny OEM mirror. Definitely prefer 400mm over 300mm.

May try a 400mm flat next...

Here’s a walkthrough of installing the Coplus/OLM/Miromoto/J’s Racing headlights.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 34966210-C343-40E1-A046-28EE0CC65EFF

Was hesitant to get these but TRS and Alligator has these on sale recently so took the plunge on these dark, aggressive beauties.

My nephew, the Honda tech gave me a hand with these. He had the bumper off in no time flat and knew exactly what needed to be removed. Some bolts here...

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BB19A040-813C-4CE0-88E3-6320FC192916

The headlight level control is here. Pretty sure it took an 8mm socket you adjust. Should be counterclockwise to raise.

I’ve read the adjustment limit is (3) full rotations and have seen some people broke theirs while adjusting the height. Thinking this may have been a design flaw in earlier models... I was able to get 15-20 turns, no problem and adjusted the cutoff beam to 23” at a distance of 25 feet.

Was a little nervous while adjusting. Expected it to snap but the turns never got tight and there was plenty of height adjustment past where I set it.

Headlights installed and bumper back on. Would have been nice to have performed this mod separate from the J’s Racing grill to see the impact of the Coplus lights by itself... bet it would look great with the OEM grill also.

Daily running lights. Seems brighter than stock.

Full headlights on. Output is not as bright as stock, but still plenty good. The cut off is much sharper, which is nice.

Really digging the Coplus headlights and the aesthetics it adds to the front end. Complements the aggressive look of the J’s Racing Grill really well.

Whoa... A buddy let me know there is a gas station that serves 100 octane racing fuel about (1) mile from my house... Had no clue it was there:bow:

Might give it a try sometime when the car finally gets tuned if it’s safe for the car...

There’s even a calculator for mixing down to 93 octane. Lol.

It’s a lot cheaper to add 1 gal of E85 to 91 to achieve 92, with or without a tune. Stations are more prevalent too (on GasBuddy app).

Heheh thanks Chris, really appreciate the kind words man, especially from a fellow Type R owner.

The Type R has been fantastic from the day I bought it until now....that I’ve kept modding shouldn’t be viewed as the platform continually needs improvement... Rather it’s my OCD tendencies kicking into high gear, which is cool and lame at the same time: Once it’s in my mind I want to do something.... often times I have to do something,

This information available on this forum, combined with the car lift we both have, has been the gateway of sorts. Being able to do the work myself, has saved on labor costs and translated into more mods :drive:

That said, I am fortunate to have an understanding wife and family that tolerate my nonsense ?

Sweet additions to your R !!!! I'm jealous Tom !!
