Thank you Frank. We are doing well so far, knock on wood. Today seems like any other weekend other than events and activities have been cancelled.. and the shortages at grocery stores.

On one hand, here is to hoping it’s a better safe than sorry overreaction and hysteria...On the other hand, reading how other countries are going into full lockdown mode and the reasons for doing so is very concerning. It feels as if we are in the calm before the storm :(

Which makes me appreciate CivicX and its forum members even more. This is one of my few interests that hasn’t been adversely affected (yet) and also complies with social distancing which is nearly upon us.

If the toilet paper shortage continues, I may have to switch gears and start looking at toilet seat mods (Bidet) instead of car parts ;)

As for the Voltex 2V, pretty certain I’m nowhere near the level of driver that would be able to tell the difference. Wanted it primarily for looks, heh. Which in hindsight probably wasn’t the smartest move as clear coat, ceramic and tax will push the price tag close to $3k. Didn’t really think that one through before pulling the trigger :(

Amid the doom and gloom, did get some good news on the parts front... Finally received tracking info for the Raceseng tow hook ordered beginning of December... The longest I’ve waited and it’s not even a JDM part.
Type R themed toilet mods is the way to go.

Hello Dave, thank you sir! Yes, was definitely an eye opener riding shotgun with the instructor the first times around the track and afterwards myself, at the wheel. It was a humbling, exhilarating and fun experience.

Have modded at a decent clip since the OCD kicked in last year... After going all in, sometimes wondered it might be an epic fail, if the track wasn’t for me and I was that guy, heh.

Definitely had “that moment” zipping around as the passenger, thinking “whoa...am I going to be able to do this? What the heck have I gotten myself into??? Holy crap!” Lol.

Fortunately, pushed that aside and didn’t do too bad, when it was my turn. Made it back in one piece and had a blast. Only regret is not hitting the track earlier to experience the car stock, which I’m sure is enough for a first time out. I share your sentiment that every Type R owner should try to experience the car on the track at least once, to gain an appreciation of how fantastic this machine truly is.

Same friend I went with is itching to go again April 11th on a slower, more technical course. Good chance that will be my 2nd outing, provided SoCal isn’t on full lock down and the weather is favorable. Want to get more track time while it’s nice and cool and see if the time I’ve practiced downshifting around town will result in an improvement at the track ;)

Glad to see you are already on the path to becoming a track junkie. The CTR is a great car for the track even though it is a bit fast for most newbies. Interesting how people who have never driven on a race track think they are really experiencing their car when in actual fact they are only scratching the surface.

I have taught at a number of HPDE and Time-Attack schools and there is no doubt that the vast majority of students are thrilled and the occasional one finds out that fast driving is not for them.

Unfortunately you may end up spending a lot more money on tires and brake pads than you originally thought was acceptable but it will all be worth it.

Ah the good old days...SoCal traffic just last week pre-corona virus.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 719F3FD4-1758-4E02-B4A3-77FE5BF973E4
Compared to coronavirus lockdown rush hour traffic today...It’s a bit eerie. This shutdown situation totally sucks... but the side benefit are the LA freeways are free and clear. This combined with cool temperatures make daily driving the Type R a fun diversion from the current crisis. Hope you are all safe.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 8F442F6D-CD82-4AA7-B419-72E0D7000F61
Finally received the Raceseng front tow hook after ordering last December 1st. At $236 or so, it’s one of the pricier options on the market. Quality seems good and it’s a lot beefier than expected. Tug (Shaft and Ring) are part# 1726101 and a shaft nut.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 7477106B-73E4-4A1A-911D-8238650E42F0
The tug ring being black, likely won’t stand out against the fake vent. It’s silly, but opted for the Raceseng because it has an “R” on it, heh.

Have the next (3) days off work, so with any luck will have some time to do the install.

The Voltex 2V is now clear coated, however the paint shop recommends (4) days curing before putting it on :(

Raceseng has an excellent install video for their tow hook here:

The install was super easy and straightforward :)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 51D79330-0CF5-4DC3-8308-58F86275CF05
First removed the left front vent.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 84EDA378-F85F-4128-B536-1C91D330ED0A
Then used a 12mm socket and long extension to remove the bolt securing the horn.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 7DC44F1B-8115-4DC7-987C-879FA6D05ABC
Moved the horn aside. It is not necessary to disconnect the electrical connector to the horn as the video says. Both of the circled bolts need to be removed from the crash beam.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R DFA6DF34-3702-4A94-B472-7159EDE9B5A0
The bolts were removed using a 14mm socket and ratchet extension.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BC148F2E-8DBF-42F3-9F80-AE20386A31A9
Inserted Raceseng’s supplied bolts into the tug shaft. Applied anti-seize to the threads.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R AF204248-F332-439E-A60C-F0140196A464
Installed the tug shaft. The (2) supplied bolts used a 17mm socket and extension.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R AFE7F3DD-E78B-4299-919E-E28C454DB384
Torqued both bolts to 60 ft/lbs.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 91515613-8A2F-46A6-9467-7BA4883870E0
Reinstalled the horn orientated sideways.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R D339FA02-644E-4D47-8292-078C5155D52D
these (3) diamonds needed to be cut for the tug shaft to fit.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B813E1B1-43E0-43DE-9D32-784DE15700B6
Heated the blade to cut the plastic like butter.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F7E96135-4EF2-4786-A0A3-1E487DDAFFF6
After the diamonds were cut, smoother the rough edges with a small hand file.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 4C056387-8947-415F-B848-F5E2ECB84722
Reinstalled the plastic vent. The Raceseng tug shaft can be used with the Tug Ring, optional license plate holder or Go Pro mount.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A5CDE669-AAEB-4E62-B5D7-B2A00F581F1B
Applied some anti seize and threaded on the tug ring and nut.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R D963FEC8-9721-46D9-96C7-5F43F568E26C
When the tug ring was almost in all the way, Locked it by tightening the shaft nut with the optional Raceseng tool.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 8BB2D7AB-5A27-4D4B-8AFE-36B90283DC87
Raceseng tow hook installed! So easy ;)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 775F6850-DD1C-432F-8DF4-1AB075BCACFE
The black tow hook blends in well with the plastic vent and is hardly noticeable, especially from a distance ;)

Was hoping to install the Voltex 2V wing this weekend, but ran into a little snag Friday.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 7E7F3502-5F43-4C30-89CA-223650DF2AB3
Noticed the mounting fasteners were SST and contrasted against the wing supports. Thought it might look better with the bolt heads, nuts and washers powder coated black, so called the place that did HKS oil cooler.

The owner said, “sure, bring it and we can do it today.”

“Great, thanks I’ll be right there!” :)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 990A2D23-FA0C-495C-9073-248FC8C3F48D

Made a quick drive from Orange County to LA and dropped these off. (14) bolts and nuts.. and (28) washers. The owner said “no problem, they will be ready @330p.

Didn’t want to wait 3.5 hours as it was 12p at the time. Drove home and ran a couple errands.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BCE86927-8F19-49CA-A470-29907B0C045F

When 330p rolled around, arrived to find the work was not completed and (20) of the washers were missing, which was ridiculous.

Worse, the owner insisted, the washers never existed. I showed him photo proof, but he wasn’t having it. I didn’t care that the work wasn’t done, but wanted to see where the bolts were disassembled and placed in the cardboard, so maybe the washers would be there.

No way. He shooed me out the door, and closed up shop. He said come back Monday and he’d buy replacement washers. There’s ridiculous, then there is totally ridiculous, sigh.

Ah well, super annoying, but not worth going apeshit over. Ordered replacements from McMaster-Carr and they will arrive Tuesday.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B21960B0-95D5-4EB6-B080-E3171AB8C346

No wing install but did a quick side by side comparison.

With the Voltex 2V wing install on hold, and some time off, decided to tackle a couple of odds and ends...

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 1B32F814-EFCE-4B00-BB63-B5AE94C55BC3
Wiped down the exhaust using WD40 and a microfiber cloth.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B26B66A6-8A07-4ABD-B609-DC28EB8FA9CB

Loosened these (2) hose clamps and adjusted this pipe section up to gain more clearance underneath.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C6A94C1A-AA44-4178-8DDF-EC647D30712F
Noticed the titanium piping has changed colors significantly since last time...Pretty sure the track day last month had a big effect.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R A374E6F3-0FD2-4004-B97F-A9DF7CFA968E
Would love to see how other titanium exhaust pipings look for those that track regularly. Too bad this it’s only visible when the car is propped up.

This coloration is more incentive to hit the track again. Was planning on hitting Buttonwillow in April, but that might be shutdown due to the Covid-19 lockdown :(

With track days likely off the table until this crisis passes, figured it would be a good time to remove the centering rings and install the adapters and center caps.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 48C392AE-F113-4CB3-BD2B-B9522D714280
Pulled the wheels and gave them a thorough clean using a wheel woolie and cleaner.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 7FD42790-FEDC-4A8C-9423-A77FD09CC9C8

So much easier to clean the wheels when they are off. Wish I had time and energy to do this at every wash.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 91B3F0B8-7EC8-4877-BB31-9B0ECE065BF6
Really nice to be able to dry the wheels and wipe down the inner barrels. Was able to remove some road debris the woolie couldnt get off.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R ACD13AD0-90FA-4FEA-9AA7-17060F90C6F6
Unfortunately the center cap color is a fail for the wheels I have. Purchased these from an EBay seller. Nice fellow. With any luck, I will be able to exchange for the right color,

Update: the seller provided the correct color caps :)

Followed Hpbyhermann’s lead on this for the red pinstripe delete. Picked up this CF vinyl tape several months ago, but haven’t had time to apply it until now. If there’s a silver lining being on lockdown is having time to catch up on projects and spending time with family, so long as no one is sick.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 366986A7-0E53-4971-8E37-52008B47A6F7
Removed these (2) screws to pull the plastic away to access the end of the pinstripe.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R E7B3F56A-F7D6-4120-B457-86F01EC65933
Cleaned the old pinstripe with alcohol and a microfiber cloth.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B7161E46-C6F7-4BAB-B791-EDA459119D0A

Removed the backing and applied the new vinyl sticker. 1/4” is a perfect fit and raising the car made it easy, ergonomically. When got to the end, cut it with a razor.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C69E399E-EAF0-4F72-AFA3-E57E35C9EDFF
The CF vinyl matches the OEM trim perfectly. Pretty amazing quality for $9.64 shipped on EBay. Placed an order for a spare roll in case this ever peels off.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 39CC6566-1A59-4E80-A1C7-371F79B231BE
Front view. Have been gradually moving to a darker color scheme, so was time for the red pinstripe to go. The nice thing is this is reversible, if get the itch for red accents again.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F1988C25-743D-498C-99E5-05AB46607101
Side view. Hub centric rings are back on for now until I’m able to get the correct color center caps.

This may not seem particularly unusual... however yesterday was the clearest view of downtown Los Angeles I’ve ever seen. Normally there’s so much smog the buildings and mountains are completely obscured.

Paid a quick visit to J’s Racing USA in Signal Hill.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 3FABEAAD-5602-4CCC-B43D-CA9F39BEE4B8
Yasu had (1) J’s Grill and emblem holder in stock, so jumped on it. Have grown to like the aggressive look and function.

This is a little ahead of schedule, but am unsure how the Covid-19 crisis may affect availability down the road, so decided to grab it now. Will take it to get painted black and clear coated before installing.

Also ordered a JDM Honda center badge.

In addition to being a very nice fellow, EBay seller Neutechauto went all out and lived up to his 100% rating and personally delivered the correct color Ray’s center caps to my house today. How cool is that?

Don’t have time to install them today, but here is a preview of what they wlll look like installed :)

If looking for wheel accessories neutechauto 619-888-8320 Cel/text proved to be a reliable source, at discounted prices.

Returning to Big Willow Friday 4/3/20 for a Speed District event. Some really nice cars will be in the field. Mine is the only Type R so far...

Was hoping my 2nd track day would be at a new course, however upcoming events might get cancelled with the Covid-19 situation and this might be the last opportunity for a little while, if everything shuts down.

Since my first track day, have been practicing on freeway transitions to get the hang of approaching turns at high speed, braking before entering a curve, downshifting and rev matching, then accelerating through...

With the SoCal freeways empty the way they are, it’s a good, brief simulation of what occurs at the track :)

Which makes a return to Big Willow interesting, in this respect:

1. I’m familiar with the track, having driven it once before.

2. Will see if that, combined with my time practicing will result in better times.

3. Hopefully my wife will let me take my older son along so he can ride shotgun. We can practice social distancing from others by staying in our car, keeping our gloves and helmets on or maintaining a healthy distance from other drivers.

Weather forecast looks favorable. Crossing my fingers the event doesn’t get cancelled :(

While I feel lucky to snag a J’s Racing grill with no wait time....Seems like it will be a bit of work and require a decent amount of time...And with a track day scheduled a week from today, a little hesitant to dive right in. We’ll see.

The instructions are in Japanese, however Yasu @J’s USA consulted with J’s Japan and provided an English translation, which will help. I’m also following metal_driver’s lead as he is performing this install and sharing a lot of great information and photos here:
https://www.civicx.com/threads/js-racing-fk8-grill.28403/page-4
https://www.civicx.com/threads/js-racing-fk8-grill.28403/page-4

I’ll also share any tips and tricks found along the way, heh.

Took it to the paint and body shop and described the fitment problem some of these grills are reported to have.

They suggested:

1. Install first without paint to avoid scratches.

2. Make adjustments to obtain the best fitment. If needed, the body shop uses a heat process to remove bowing and eliminate gaps. If they need to get involved it the fitment aspect, it will be an extra $200-400 depending on the amount of labor needed. Definitely hoping this step won’t be needed.

3. When the fitment is dialed in, remove the grill, paint and clear coat, which will be $180.

4. Allow to cure, then PFF and ceramic. Cost not known.

5. Reinstall grill to the car. Done.

Have not yet fully digested the instructions so will see if that makes sense ;)

Yes I highly recommend it. Matches the existing faux pas CF lip perfectly and is less than $10. Picked up an extra roll in case any ever fades or peels off ;)

Voltex 2V wing bracket with supplied SST fasteners, as they originally arrived.

Fasteners after $40 powder coat and replacement SST black anodized washers. Was it worth the hassle? ;)

Wing can be installed any time now.. though I may wait until after 4/3/20 so it’s not damaged at the track before it can be PFF’d and ceramic. Dunno.
