Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 637F565E-53F5-42E9-A6E3-30052B903617
*Whelp* it’s been a few months and RL got in the way of completing this write up. Apologies if you were following along, didn't intend to leave on a cliffhanger.

In a perfect world, time is taken to document along the way. However, this adventure was a bit rushed as my buddy @boosted180sx was on a tight schedule to sell his R and I wanted to swap for his upgraded Sweidit interior parts. Then the holidays hit and it has been an unusually cold and wet SoCal winter. Also during this time, was selected for a new role at another facility that started January 3rd.

All the while, the car has sat undriveable. Making matters worse, was dreaded the reinstall and figuring how to put things back together after the (3) month break, with my wonky memory, haha. Fortunately, still had plenty of pictures to refer back to.

But ready to finish this out as time permits. Definitely one of the more challenging writeups to do.

Next to remove was the start button, which is held in place by plastic tabs. Gently pulled it off.

Revealing this electrical plug.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BD4A9B7F-9282-44C6-8B26-106A6379CAA8

Pressed the release and off it came.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 034981CA-F551-4562-9042-8C9FE398937A

Voila, start button removed.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 301C3578-EC19-41C2-9E60-8E9D8EB2B1E8

Next was to undo what I believe is the GPS bracket.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 160F727B-3FA9-45F8-B4FB-B8644D16B5A6

Instrument display was next to come off. It's held by (3) phillips screws.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F8691D89-14CB-4885-8E08-39A6C4FB8065

A slim screwdriver does the trick.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 8F68B8BC-5F31-4CE3-9C9F-47681A77DAAE

There are (2) plugs to undo.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 58F7CBC1-16E7-4377-80D2-A345A1F14F48

Not sure why this plug doesn't appear to be used for anything.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 93BFBAC7-A493-4820-BE94-C12871F9B660

Instrument cluster removed.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 537A4C06-F713-46AB-8696-2F65CAFA6C63

And this is what is left behind.

Apologies for the laggy reply. By garnishes, are you referring to the J's Racing sidewing and canards? If so, yes they fit very well.

Don't know if you mentioned it ... but how was the fitment with the Js Racing side bumper garnishes ? Compared to OEM.

The plug that isn't used because they probably use the same cluster shell for all 10th gen. If you had an auto, you'd probably have a plug there for the shifter positions.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R AFB83232-07A1-4133-88FF-1FBBD2F359D0

Whelp... Finally have time to start catching up on this odyssey of a write up. Unfortunately, in the form of a positive Covid-19 test, so I've been put off work 10 days. Other than a sore throat and slight cough doing ok, just waiting to get better. My wife and youngest son also have it. Here is a look back at the center console, with the ultimate goal of removing the entire dashboard.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 1EAE1B47-59C0-415F-BACB-1B33615B71B0

Carefully pried the center speaker.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 59087A8C-AF50-4646-A8B8-9206825EE747

And lifted up and out.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 06DCCC3A-D73C-4189-8A3A-35FC34CC62C4

Then disconnected the audio connector and set the speaker aside.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 452C5E06-1756-47EC-A3C2-3B0232D63202

Not quite sure what this little gizmo is but it has a recess for a flat screwdriver to pry it. This picture shows where the rat gnawed away the defroster vents and can see the shavings.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 0FC3B28A-778D-40AC-88C3-8440071995EE

And it has an electrical connector as well.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R CA101953-D84E-466C-8E18-696165E3D8E7

Press the tab and off it comes.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R DD152A40-8C52-4996-B040-F160765C063A

Made sure to note how the wires are routed for when it's time to reinstall.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 87D2D46A-FD67-4DF8-823C-63CCE0DE676D

Moved to the center console and lifted the rubber mat to expose the tabs to release the USB and cigarette lighter housing.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F6B2B448-467D-41FD-808C-D2B40A3047CB

Pried loose inserting a pick or flat screwdriver in this tab.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R FC3F48B2-1E45-4921-A0DE-2388EE8BD5CC

Separated the housing exposing the electrical connectors.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F958849F-E032-4801-AD2D-40E4E71154FF
And undid them.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 18BB43EE-B312-44C6-A744-C2EB2CDA7655

Then undid all the electrical connector holding clips. First in the shifter housing.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B6853FF4-D29C-475B-9325-70FC6FE0873B

Then moved to the rear seat. Pulled this plastic cover off the back of the console.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 42F3090B-C129-495E-A113-27EB1E7D47C8

Exposing this electrical connector.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B35FCEFB-298C-479D-94C7-550C9CA1E9F5

Undid it and released the holding clip.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C2EF0A53-9650-4F5D-8CE2-2DBE694C69D2

Undid these screws securing the center console.

Undid the holding clips for these connectors inside the center console.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 1D74EE80-7AB5-42D3-A9AA-9EDDCADD3655

And made sure the USB charge port was free and any connector clips. I didn't capture it, but there are a couple bolts to remove inside the armrest area of the center console that have to come out also.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 7ED94FF2-9467-4EF7-85B6-ADD083B62B1B

With all wiring and bolts confirmed separated and removed, lifted the center console.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 02F47817-AEE3-444D-BB81-936F71FD328D

Next was to remove the steering wheel.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R EFDBFDB1-0EFE-4D76-9D62-05F21C0E4F13

Remove this Torx security bolt on the side.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 4BE10436-1F94-4997-8586-E655CC6D9518

Believe it's a T-30 torx bit.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 2793C5AE-103F-4EE9-AD32-255367F5B367
And remove from the other side.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R AAA8CF72-B8B6-412E-B73C-115A252C6F7A

Which then releases the driver side airbag.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 7266E74A-D204-47EC-914B-6F18F2D76DEC
Pry both white plastic tabs at the same time to release the connectors.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 31DBA378-AE61-40ED-B6EB-AA85F754882F

Both connectors undone. Believe the remaining wire connector is the ground.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 1409FC7A-DF78-4412-9D3F-E41C0EA7CB3F

Release it by pressing the tab with a pick tool.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 3778239C-3087-4D95-92DA-605FA8B0E830
Air bag removed and put away for safe keeping.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 50B52F27-7DE7-4613-A99E-75F600340B60

Undo the ground wire from this holder then undo the white connector next to it.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 3733D0C8-EBEB-458C-B643-7A0A4EFC8A6D

Use a breaker bar to loosen the center bolt that holds the steering wheel to the column.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BE6E0151-7BEB-4177-8C09-3FF27BBA06E3

And remove the bolt. Note the orientation of the steering wheel before pulling off. In a perfect world, I'd have had the wheels straight with no offset. But I should be able to get it close enough when it goes back on.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 02B076DD-580C-4D29-866E-265DC6E5CCC4
Steering wheel then pulls off easily. For removal of the dashboard, I learned afterwards it may be helpful to remove the (2) stalks on either side of the column. I skipped doing this step.

There is one here.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 2059538F-83BA-4172-8660-CEDD7D6B4E51

And one on each corner by the windshield.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 54B9C9C3-4042-4C60-BBD1-3A97CCBD0685

A long extension is needed for the driver's side.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B19A36BA-FBCD-42BA-A7CC-865253F04535

And the passenger's side.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C580D1C4-C8AC-436C-8F2C-5D71C0051336

There's also a bolt inside here.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 6FBAE1E3-83DE-4F0A-9110-8C7ADA90ACB0

And a larger bolt underneath by the passenger airbag.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C2A188F8-4105-4512-B819-6766F0E4991B

And anothe in the center. Rechecked to make sure I'd gotten them all.

Continued to undo wiring clips.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 4F2CAF80-8801-4DD4-AD85-A62F2E4037A8

There are several on the passenger side.

Underneath the dash as well.

What a hassle! At this point I was hating on that rat that forced me to do this, lol.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 794DB237-F765-4B3B-9595-3B93584E5942

When I was confident that I'd gotten all of the connectors and bolts, gently began pulling the dashboard away.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 6DE2C4E9-B26A-4D0F-927D-60FBED7F8FE5

Felt something hanging up, so immediately stopped to check what it was.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 107A8B0C-3100-4E0D-96CB-B04E700BA342

From underneath could see this connector still attached.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R FEBE2D51-8A05-4A44-9979-43F9A5AC50A8

Reached up with a picktool and released it.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 8D68FE09-3338-4C39-9C8E-1315A221C7B3

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C9D93888-D99C-41AA-9B33-14BB5E0884AF

The loom seperated easily just by gently tugging on it.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R C42B48CB-DF6A-4A1A-9F92-20883C96154F

Then the dashboard was finally free! Worked it loose and pulled it out through the passenger side door.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 78E50C91-B0DD-43A8-8C8B-056C45F783AC

Dash board removed! Finally :)

With the dashboard finally removed. Was able to replace the rat chewed vents. Turned out both of these pieces needed replacement. Man, I'll never leave my windows cracked like that again.

The (2) pieces will eventually fit together like this. However, the top piece has to attach to the dashboard before the defroster vent duct is added.

Dashboard ready for reinstall. Won't go too much into detail as it's just the reverse of what was covered previously. However I probably will share some tidbits of wisdom and he’s lessons I learned along the way.

Whew what an ordeal... All that just to replace a chewed up defroster vent, smh.

Turning lemons to lemonade, you may notice the dash is now an Alcantara one. My buddy @boosted180sx parted out then sold his R so I snagged his Swedit Alcantara interior bits. There was some extra incentive to do the full teardown.

Will post some pix once the car is all back together and looking clean and nice.

Well, seeing as I've got some downtime due to covid, will share some reinstall tips to hopefully help anyone avoid pitfalls I've encountered. First, it was appalling to see how dirty my car was so vacuumed the interior really well, heh.

Started this project at the beginning of November 2022 and finally got back to it this week and it's February 2023. Admittedly, wasn't looking forward to resuming as so much time had passed and this promised to be a pain in the ass. Thank goodness for photos to refer back to jog the memory of how things came apart.

Took a good gander of how the wiring was situated.

When reinstalling the dash, it's best to have a 2nd person, but I was able to do it solo. Once it's in place, there is really only room for one person to work anyway. Fished it back in the same way it came out, through the passenger door.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 8B0BBEB5-7EAA-4828-944D-DAA91E2911A0

Set the dash roughly where it was supposed to sit. Then tried to line up bolt holes and wiring harnesses. It wouldn't initally go where it needed to, so required patience and finesse.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 490836B0-09CD-48D5-883F-0DE711C8CD6B

Found it helpful to pull the door seals.

After some frustrating fitment attempts, noticed this dowel that needed to be engaged. ;)

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 54E7E7AB-3D44-4A73-B821-53A11EB7E100

At the same time, the wiring harnesses needed to be snapped back into place. Which required some body contortion.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R B739A4E0-0B58-47F5-B4B1-022311FCF4D3

In addition, had to make sure electrical connectors when back to the proper openings from whence they came.

More snapping of electrical wiring back into place.

Here also along the passenger side.

And inside the dash. Hands got a little scuffed during the process. With any luck, will never have to do this ever again.

Took several attempts, but knew I got it right when all the bolt holes finally lined up. The corners were the hardest. Double checked all the wiring was fed back through the correct openings, referencing photos that were taken on disassembly.

Reinstalled the ‘A’ pillars Sweidit wrapped in Alcantara.

Also swapped to Sweidit sunvisors. Mangled one of the stock ones while figuring out how to remove them…. So here is the trick in case you ever need to.

This white nub needs to rotate to the right to release the visor from the roof. Honda in their infinite wisdom, placed this opening in a location where it is extremely difficult to see.

This is true for certain for the passenger side. The direction might be reversed for the driver’s side or it could be the same. So don’t force it if it doesn’t move easily.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 3560826D-9D40-4074-BC14-0C3039C9A994

Use a pick tool to press it towards the right. Force it left and it will be ruined. That’s a mistake I did.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 96FB7AA5-0883-4FE0-8184-6DC6E375EDB3

This is not far enough. Gotta keep going right.

Still not enough. Keep going.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R BF4DF472-93A9-4FB7-9DCD-BA69E0BEEA0D

When the nub is pressed all the way, the sunvisor locking mechanism will release.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R 864FB726-5CCE-4F5B-B8A9-FF96B4332A56

Then rotate the visor itself counter clockwise to make it lock in. This is the passenger side. The driver side is either the same or a mirror of this. It’s a little tricky to do as the release window and nub face the windshield.

Honda Civic 10th gen Fatherpain’s 2018 Type R F2891C13-D917-4894-BA4E-3CA73C78B858

Sweidit sunvisor installed. ;)

More Sweidit parts installed: glove box, passenger trim, gauge hood, instrument trim, start button housing, center console, wings, A pillars + Upgraded Honda floor mats.

Interior coming along slowly but surely. :)

The "gizmo" toward your windshield is the daylight sensor or ambient light sensor or DRL sensor or solar somesh*t (couple different names) but it's basically in charge of turning your lights on and off based on day/night. They rarely ever go bad.

First I want to say that you're doing an amazing job!

Second, I'm surprised you didn't go full red carpet and new R red seats. Also, are you installing a cage?
