I have a 2018 Sport Touring Hatchback with 18x8 wheels. My problem is my wife and I are senior citizens(71) and between the two of us, We have all four wheels with curb rash and one chip on the edge. At almost $500 apiece to replace, I think my best option would be to downsize to 17 inch rims in order to get more side wall. at least we would scuff the tire instead. Obviously We don't drive the car aggressively so I'm not worried about losing some handling capabilities. our previous Civics had 17 inch rims and we had no issues.
Any suggestions, on this idea?

I think you can run 16's as well. get a tire with more side wall height as well as rim lip protector and you should be great. the extra height on the side wall will also give you a softer ride.

you just need to match to what the non sport and sport tourings run. I believe mine is 17x7.5 running 215/50/r17 tires which matches the size my car came with stock, albeit i put on aftermarkets.
