No symptoms, no leaks, no noise or vibrations, no slow acceleration.

Turned out of my neighborhood, it shuddered bad, like it was losing traction, VSA flashing, then lost drive.

Pullover, lost reverse.

No banging noise, no oil leaks. I'm at a loss for this one.
It happened after I read these codes from Honda, replaced Dr axel and WSS

And my friends scan tool was able to clear the drive ability codes.

All codes cleared and she drove fine, but the 1st day VSA would flash with 50% throttle. Next day, VSA light would flash while braking.

One day.....
The she lost acceleration and costed to the grass.

Shift linkage work.

We’ll all be curious about how often you did a fluid service on the trans, what your driving habits are like, and whether or not the car was tuned.

Sorry to hear that, I think I read about your post somewhere on one of the CVT thread stating you have only changed the fluid once?

Any thoughts about replacing it with a used one? Get it rebuild or do a manual swap?

Considering I have 173,000 miles on my 2016 EX, I'm very curious about this.
  1. How often did you replace the CVT fluid?
  2. What CVT fluid did you use?
  3. Did you ever replace any CVT filters?
  4. What are your driving conditions?
    1. heavy city/stop-and-go? mild city? mostly highway?
  5. What are your driving habits?
    1. Heavy acceleration? high-speed runs? casual?
  6. Any mods to the vehicle?
  7. Ever involved in a collision?

Did you ever changed the filters in the 170k miles?

1st fluid change around 60k miles, at Honda with OE fluid

2nd change around 180k, when I replace the motor due to cylinder 3 misfire, used valvoline (or w/e orileys had)

Not sure if Honda replaced the filter, but I never did

No tune
FBO - aFe Takeda CAI, high flow cat/dp, full cat back

Multiple *minor* collisions

Driving habits: a lot of WOT, mostly highway, a lot of dropping to S or L (for acceleration or deacceleration), a few cross country road trips, minimal city driving

Average highway speeds of 80 - 100 mph, with plenty of 125mph runs

Honestly, I dogged the shit out of this car. Really surprised it held on for as long as she did.

I'm thinking my best bet is to buy a used CVT for $400 that only has ~38k miles on it

Just gotta find a shop to R&R it since my buddy who helped with the motor R&R is traveling doing racecar shit

Dude, no offense, but considering the vehicle's history, you got your moneys worth getting 200k miles out of it.
None taken.

I definitely got my money's worth, and it goes to show how important CVT maintenance is.

Crazy how there were no symptoms or codes before complete failure. It ran 100% until it didn't.

No.
I've changed fluid twice at 50K mile intervals per the maintenance minder, and then twice at 35k miles for "mountainous driving" per the manual.

I've done all my services myself. The drain bolt magnet has had nothing on it. The service manual does not state changing the filters, so I intend to never change them so long as the drain bolt magnet remains clean at my changes.

I drive primarily highway miles, with 2000 mile round-trip’s Friday to Sunday once or twice a month. And I have the cruise set somewhere between 85 and 95, depending on the time of day.

I call that a win, " w/e orileys had " probably lead to it's death. CVT's are dirt cheap, this thread is a positive lol
I was thinking the same thing. Anything but Honda fluid will probably lead to a premature death and also going over 100,000 miles without changing the fluid probably had something to do with it too.

IMO it's amazing it lasted 206,XXX miles considering the 3 things I highlighted. Honda built a pretty damn solid CVT.
