I definitely second the "aggressive" piece of that. They've been out so long and I've looked at mine for 3 years straight so I totally forgot how aggressive the design was when it came out. It's actually the reason I got the car... Looks amazing with the practicality to fit most anything you want.

Honda is huge on MPG ratings so I'd have to agree there as well, they're not really after cooling benefits from the factory. Makes sense for the base models but most people buy an R to at least have SOME fun with it.... so you would think they would have maybe modified the design to be more functional.
Agreed, but the only time you'll have over heating issues is at the track so I don't think they really cared too much about that since the vast majority never track the car.

I originally cut out the diamonds back in 2017 cause I simply didn't like the look of it being fake. It's the same reason I've replaced all the faux carbon fiber with real carbon fiber.

Then this past year I got into tracking the car and building it up for performance and luckily my more functional vents allowed me to install a dual oil cooler system.

I wish Honda had simply made the car this way, but I am appreciative that we have the ability to utalize that space regardless.

I used both a Dremel and the box knife method on two grills - the box cutter worked better.

@siwelnosaj
Jason, not to hijack this thread but I am very interested in hearing about your dual oil cooler system as I am sure others are.. Maybe you could create a new thread to tell us what you did and how it is working out for your so far

Here are some pics of how it came together. I honestly don't have any data on how much better a dual set up might be over a single cooler.

Jason, nice size oil cooler cores (that Sant brought you). Kind of look like the Mishi ones.. Nice job fitting those up. I see you pulled the windshield washer bottle which was a good call. I got an oil cooler in on that side as well but left the cooler bottle in. That was a real squeeze. Looks like you pulled your brake ducts as well..
From what I can tell so far I'm getting good cooling at the track (novice/beginner level - stock power) with the dual oil core set up and the fog lights pulled for track days (along with some other cooling mods).

I did pull the ducts, but on my new ride (2020 I will have them in, I found a better way to fit the cores that are mishimoto ones)

Having tired using both a Dremel and the box knife method on two grills I highly doubt sanding/grinding out from behind would work unless you are extremely skilled and have just the right tool tbh..
I think I remember hearing about it from a HondaProJason video, but has anyone tried sanding/grinding out the vents from the back side? Seems like it would take a lot less time than going at it with a craft knife/soldering iron.
For the record, im not very skilled and this was the 1st time i have ever used a grinder.

About 45 min per vent. I assume that it would take less time for someone that is comfortable with the grinder. I also spray painted the area behind the vent wkthblack spray paint

Decided to x-acto blade and box cutter my front fake vents and make them functional, but instead of cutting all the diamond inserts figured I do it different and leave some as to give it some sort of design ...

Liked the outcome, plus saved a little time from cutting all of it.. (very time consuming to do)

Thoughts ? Will eventually get some better ones down the line, for now these will do.

will also do rear vents

Here is one side finished, will repost when all are complete ...

Where you buy the mesh from
I went to a local metal supply store. The one here in san diego is called Industrial Metal Supply Co. This one is about .063 or 1/16 of an inch thick so it doesnt bend easy if it hits rock. Think its $15.00 for a 2'x4' sheet but not sure.

Forgot to post finished look here so here it is... was posted on another thread too tho, Also some shot of rear vents as well, these are oem and I used a box cutter blade very meticulously! Very time consuming FYI on the Front ones, rears were fairly quick
