I recently purchased a 2019 Civic Hatchback Sport Touring. And of course with a new car you watch and drive carefully. I don't speed and actually have not had it out of ECON mode trying to get the best gas mileage possible.

So I am driving through small town (mine) and going about 40 in a 45 MPH zone at 3:30AM. Dark, and I have to be to work as this is normal. I cross an intersection (small roads) and then some time later notice a car far behind me. He must be going 80 mph. I am concerned. New car and all and of course at that hour.

Turns out to be a cop. Sorry, I hate them. Scared me to death. I am 56 BTW. He was really moving. So, I need to install my Passport 8500ci hidden radar and dash cams. I would have loved to post that to You Tube as after he tailgated me and passed my car. No worries I am under the speed limit. But don't police need to obey the speed limit? Or at least have their lights on? My dash cam from the other car would have identified his plate.

At that hour I am more concerned with DUI drivers and deers. I don't speed and if I do it is to get out of the way. I really wish I could get to the point of not needing radar or dash cams but situations like this don't help. Trust no one. Record it all. Yes, I am sure in the end I am screwed no matter what. Sweet to have video proof. Not sure it would help. Wonder what would have happen if I posted that to You Tube? Had I had my front and rear Blackvue installed.

Thoughts? Yes I am over paranoid. Glad it was a cop, at least he would not rear end me. I would like to make it to getting my tag on the car first before that happens. Rear end collision.

I wish with all those cameras on the car they would record. Would make my life so much easier. Need to find my battery Radar Detector (Passport) to use until I can wire in the other one. Which with the wave of my hand would record audio in case I was pulled over. Been there with the last car as the dealer screwed up and until they did something I could not get plates. Another try long story.

I wish I had no need for radar and dash cams. I just don't trust cops and I don't speed. Just watch cops behaving badly on You Tube and no wonder I am concerned.

BTW, new car, 33 miles per gallon in ECON mode so far. Not broke in. I hope to get to 40 MPG. Already better than other car very pleased.

Thoughts.......

Don't think I've seen something like that. That's pretty worrisome though. The only cops I've ever disliked were from the town I grew up in. They would sit at the bottom of a hill in town and try to get an easy ticket on people coasting down it doing 35 in a 30. I've never really been concerned with police otherwise.

Do the world a huge favor. Don't go 40 in a 45 zone. Do the speed limit. If I was doing 50 or whatever in a 45 and came up behind someone doing 40 I'd ride their ass too lol. I respect people who do the speed limit and give them space. But if you're doing less than the speed limit (assuming conditions are good) you're likely too scared of driving or not confident in the condition of your vehicle or its ability to keep traction. And if that's a case, get new tires.

Also do yourself a huge favor. Stop feeding confirmation bias by watching crap like that on YouTube. You think people post videos of normal cops doing their jobs on YouTube? You think that because a small number of cops abuse their power that it's representative of the vast majority of officers? Most officers just wanna do their job and go home the same as anyone else.

And if you think he wouldn't rear end you just cause it's a cop, you're sadly mistaken. Anyone can be distracted/dui/aggressive.

Yes you're paranoid lol.

Exactly. If someone is going under the posted speed limit the person behind them (including myself) gets irritated and rides the persons ass. Especially in the early morning when people are trying to get to work.

Yeah lol. That's the point of a vehicle, to get where you need to go quickly and efficiently. The only thing that frustrates me more on the road is people who brake before going in the turning lane, and then theyre half in half out of the lane by the time they're stopped. Are you asking to get clipped? Cause that's how you get clipped. Turn into the turning lane at speed and then slow down to turn, it's not that hard lol

Y’all just don’t get it. Cops in the deep south aren’t like cops the rest of the country. Mostly because they are overworked, underpaid, corrupt, and everybody is carrying. Where I live, it is legal to have an AK fully loaded with the safety off tucked in between the seats. So, routine traffic stops, and police behavior in general, can be quite confrontational.

For example, I got pulled over for speeding (10 over) when I was in college by LA state police, the first thing he asks me was “are you transporting narcotics?” He then repeatedly tried to get to get me to admit to doing that, otherwise he couldn’t “help me.” He eventually gave me my ticket and left.

Now, keep in mind I was driving a yellow VW beetle, with a folded down back seat, and every inch of the car visible to him, with nothing in it. He had his hand on his gun the whole time. I’m white, clean cut, and have no criminal record either (race is a very big deal in police interactions where I live). FYI I paid the court a little extra money and negotiated my ticket down to a seat belt violation lol.

What OP described is very much commonplace and I have been tailgated multiple times by police because many of them commonly travel at 30+ mph over the speed limit. In Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, etc. cops routinely disregard traffic laws. I have been cut off, aggressively tailgated, and been passed on the right on numerous occasions and I am usually one of the faster cars on the road.

Well, let's see. I live in the country. Large neighborhood surrounded by horse farms. At 3AM, again 3AM, no one is out and about except DEER. My last car Mini Cooper Coupe (AKA like Mazda Miata) the deer were larger. I see groups of 6 or 7. So I drive slow. Sorry, I don't have a light bar or off road lights.

When I do see a car, I speed up and go speed limit or if he rides my ass I go 5 or 10 over as a curtesy. Hence why I want radar. Country road, Cop is like a mile back maybe not that far, he must be doing 80+ to catch me. Why????? Cops read your plates. Their car reads your plate automatically. I live in Lawrenceville and drive into Atlanta to work. How many trust Atlanta Police? Oh, yeah. there was and article in the paper where the Sheriff in my county bought a Dodge Hellcat for his personal use. Corruption. True. And I had no idea that car was $70K. http://www.fox5atlanta.com/news/i-t...grees-to-use-tax-dollars-for-hellcat-purchase

It took me eight months to get a parking space in Atlanta. Prior to that I rode MARTA. At my hours, I would park in the MARTA deck and sit in my car (then Mini Cooper Coupe S) and wait for the train. I was hassled by Marta Police all the time. I guess they thought guy in sports car with suit looking to buy drugs? So feeding conformation is first hand experience of how I have been treated. BTW, I am a CPA and I work for the railroad (NS). Just so you can draw all kinds of conclusions and stereotypes about me. Reporter interviewed me about it - link below.

I went on a roadtrip last christmas to North Cal. I was about 30 mins away from the hotel, I spotted a cop car coming down the ramp at the corner of my eyes. This was 11pm on christmas eve, the entire scene only has 3 cars visible. Me, the cop and another car in front of me. The cop got right onto my tail within second after he merged onto the freeway. Knowing that its a cop, I didnt do anything and just drove the speed limit. The cop moved onto the car in front of me a minute later, did the same thing and got right onto its tail. The car didnt know that its a cop and I saw his brake light came on. The next thing I knew was full blue and red flashing light and two cars pulling over.

Just be careful out there.

Anyone who ever watched TV shows like Live PD knows that 80% of what the traffic cops do in the US is stop suspect cars for tag lights or erratic driving or whatever, and then search for drugs. This is how they make money.
Fact is, there is a lot of worthless dopeheads driving around.
The rest of their work is to catch for DUI and speeding.

I had a cop tailgating me on a multi-lane freeway more than once, and I was not slow. In those states where radar detectors are illegal, like VA, they will come really close behind or on the side and look for radar detectors. One time the cop tailgating me closely and aggressively was undercover, so I run ahead way over the speed limit, passed the car to the right of me and then changed the lane to let him pass. He pulled me over and gave me a speeding ticket. I went to court to dispute the ticket. The cop did not appear and my ticket was cancelled by the judge.

Not true at all that the cops in the South or rural areas are badder and more corrupt. No cops are worse, more rude and more abusive than in NYC and other urban areas. Like those who searched the ass of a man for drugs, found nothing, and then wanted him to pay for it. Typical pretext stop of a driver with a known rap sheet.

Do the world a huge favour and grow up. Folks like you make me wanna vomit with that nonsense. You can tailgate all you like, for as long as you like. But sorry dude that bullying shit ain’t gonna intimidate me and many others to travel faster just because your an impatient road rager. If I’m doing a reasonable speed and someone don’t like it, they can easily go around, that’s what the other lane or broken lines are for. Haha...your a funny guy:)

A cop trying to go somewhere fast? Oh maybe they had to respond to someone beating their wife or a robbery in progress and didn't want to alert the criminal with lights and sirens? Maybe it was time for him to go home lol idk wouldn't you want him to drive like that if you called 911? You probably complain about millenials too lol

Lol I wish you were right!

A nearby sheriff is the only elected official in the nation to have knowingly ordered the the widespread illegal confiscation of firearms in the nation.During the evacuation/aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, I was there when they were literally stopping every single car coming to/from New Orleans and conducting unconstitutional searches and confiscating firearms.

Then there’s the NOPD gunning down innocent people who were trying to escape the flood waters.

As you can see, everyone from the NRA to the National Socialist movement says that southern law enforcement is the worst. And sadly, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
