I've been ignoring my exhaust tips when I wash the car. Now I'm noticing a lot of black (carbon?) build up on them. Whats the best way to clean this? Chemical or Abrasive?

Borla Exhaust Cleaner & Polish. A little expensive, but let it sit for 60-90 seconds and then vigorously polish off and stainless or chrome will look better than new. Its been around a long time.

I bought some Oven Cleaner that I'm going to try out once I get a minute to wash my car.

Also have some 303 metal polish I might try - I thought it was for final pass, but it might cut through the grime too

I use the same products I clean my wheels with. Sonax wheel cleaner plus or P&S brake buster and agitate with a brush.

Excessive carbon build up around the exhaust tips are normal? Someone posted it could be indicative of engines running rich. True or not ?

Some carbon build up is normal. OP indicated that the tips hadn’t been cleaned in a while, so a lot has accumulated.

I've never really "cleaned" the exhaust pipes. Just sprayed them with soapy water.

I would start from least aggressive to most aggressive

I typically use a wheel cleaner and agitate

For carbon that has been stuck on there longer, P21S polishing soap is more aggressive and one step under a metal polish

I've had success with autofanatic's secret weapon too

i would reserve metal polish for last

I’m not that familiar with metal polish. For newer cars, will metal polish add any protection against the buildup including easier removal later on or no, just use it when you have buildup that soap and water will not remove?

I don't think so, it's just more aggressive

I find regular cleaning (make it part of your wheel cleaning procedure since you can often use the same wash soap / wheel brushes) prevents that buildup

I use mothers metal polish and a brillo pad. Cleans it up nicely.
