Catless downpipes? Where have they gone?

If catless is soo heavily needed for your tunes, couldn't you just cut open a stock cat, gut it out then weld it back up? Still gives the stock look but is now free-flow.

It wouldn't exactly be free-flow by doing that. The exhaust gases will become turbulent inside of there because the design accommodates the converter. When you take it out, it's not going to be a smooth pipe and the flow will be a bit wacky. Think how it bumps out at the top and then at the bottom goes back in. Catless pipes are designed to be a smooth straight pipe for the best flow of gases
