So I absolutely love brake hold... especially at stop lights or stop and go traffic it gives me some time to rest the back of my feet! It seems that whenever I have it engaged, and get home, I put the car in park and get out only to come back and the parking brake is on. It is a minor annoyance, and a direct definition of "first world problems", but is there a setting for this? Or does it do that as a safety precaution?

It's by design.
All you have to do is take your seat belt off ,to cancel brake hold and set the parking brake.
Or just shut the engine off, same thing.

There a whole list of things that will do it automatically.
They don't want you walking away from the car relying on brake hold.
