I did try to use a chisel, but I was not able to get the spindle opening wide enough to accept the strut. Even if I did, I would not have been able to get the retaining bolt back into the spindle. The Bilstein strut was easily 2-3 mm larger in diameter than the original strut.

Yes my bro. I was not insisting on installing a larger strut. I was simply commenting on the paint thickness which is in the microns. My conclusion is that a little oil can help, chisel the most, and paint sanding stands as lowest chance of making installation easier. Regards
